Working for the Department of Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry hosts a large undergraduate and graduate education program.

We are a research-intensive department with most Faculty members leading cutting-edge independent research programs across a broad range of topics.

Position
Position for an Electron Microscopy Technician for research into the structural biology of prions and misfolded protein aggregates.

Responsibilities include operation of a Talos F200C electron microscope and ancillary equipment, support and training for research projects by postdoctoral fellows, students, and visiting scientists, and troubleshooting/optimizing protocols in consultation with colleagues and the PI.

Duties will be completed within the biosafety level 2 research laboratories in the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases

Duties

Operate and maintain a Talos F200C electron microscope located in a biocontainment suite
Teach postdoctoral fellows and students the use of the electron microscope; support other scientists and students with their imaging projects (80% of time for both items combined)
Supervise and chaperone service engineers while they service the electron microscope (5% of time)
Order supplies and lab equipment for use with the electron microscope (5% of time)
Prepare data and figures for presentations and publications (10% of time)

Qualifications

2year labbased diploma with a B.Sc./M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, or related discipline
Minimum of 2year experience in Electron Microscopy, preferentially in analyzing biological samples including cryo lowdose techniques
Excellent organizational, analytical, and administrative abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong written, and oral communication
Proven ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
