Working for the Department of Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry hosts a large undergraduate and graduate education program.

We are a research-intensive department with most Faculty members leading cutting-edge independent research programs across a broad range of topics.


Position
Position for an Electron Microscopy Technician for research into the structural biology of prions and misfolded protein aggregates.

Responsibilities include operation of a Talos F200C electron microscope and ancillary equipment, support and training for research projects by postdoctoral fellows, students, and visiting scientists, and troubleshooting/optimizing protocols in consultation with colleagues and the PI.

Duties will be completed within the biosafety level 2 research laboratories in the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases


Duties

  • Operate and maintain a Talos F200C electron microscope located in a biocontainment suite
  • Teach postdoctoral fellows and students the use of the electron microscope; support other scientists and students with their imaging projects (80% of time for both items combined)
  • Supervise and chaperone service engineers while they service the electron microscope (5% of time)
  • Order supplies and lab equipment for use with the electron microscope (5% of time)
  • Prepare data and figures for presentations and publications (10% of time)

Qualifications

  • 2year labbased diploma with a B.Sc./M.Sc. in Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, or related discipline
  • Minimum of 2year experience in Electron Microscopy, preferentially in analyzing biological samples including cryo lowdose techniques
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and administrative abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong written, and oral communication
  • Proven ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
