The
Manager, External Research Partnerships will be responsible for business development activities that develop a roster of industry partners and opportunities and enhancing the overall industry liaison infrastructure, including supporting central reporting to public and private funding agencies, and performing other custom and ad-hoc reporting.

Key support will also include identifying new faculty opportunities, fostering a culture of commercialization within the Faculty and facilitate the connection with MILO related to intellectual property strategy and management.

This role will also help plan and organize high profile events to engage industry executives.

Internally, this function will lead the development and maintenance of a pipeline of early innovators within the Faculty of Science by leveraging the McMaster Seed Fund, as well as Health Innovation, Commercialization & Entrepreneurship program and other on-campus resources supporting early-stage innovation and commercialization activity.


1. Innovation and Commercialization - Faculty Support

  • Directly manage related activities of and provide leadership to facutly, staff and students with respect to engagement with the internal and ecternal innovation and commercialization ecosystem
  • Actively seek out and engage industry stakeholders within target sectors and facilitate the connection of industry problems with solutions from academic research
  • Develop and manage the full pipeline of commercialization opportunities within the Faculty of Science (FoS)
  • Implement and manage FoS innovation and commercialization wraparound support structures for Facultybased opportunities and new ventures
  • Develop, track and report on Innovation & Commercialization program KPIs

2. Innovation and Commercialization - Central Support

  • Facilitate disclosures and patent obtainment with MILO and enhance Faculty policies and processes to increase activity and efficiency
  • Manage and support Faculty of Science stakeholders and new ventures in accessing the McMaster Seed Fund and other opportunities

3. University Advancement Support

  • Collaborate on relevant industry partner relationship building and cultivation activities
  • Share prospect information with Science Advancement team and act on prospect information provided by Science Advancement team
  • Assist with the design and development of strategic VIP events and engagement opportunities for industry and government stakeholders
  • Provide expertise and support in the development of new and innovative nongrant funding models

4. Major Grants & Industry Sponsored Research

  • Develop and implement a strategy and workplan for actively engaging and building a wide network of industry partners, stakeholders, employers and investors to increase funding from external sources to support research and strategic research initiatives (e.g. research commercialization, infrastructure and facilities specific programs, specialized technical staff, etc.)
  • Partner with University Advancement in collaboration with, and support of, the McMaster MITACS Officer to grow activity in this area

5. People Management

  • Lead and develop staff within the Science/Engineering integrated team structure
  • Recruit, train, manage and evaluate Administrative Coordinator (Joint with Engineering)
  • Define and scope additional Program supports (eg: Program Coordinator) as needed, develop Job Descriptions, recruit and evaluate
