Overview:
Elementary and Secondary Education Assistants (EAs) support individual students or groups of students in grades K-12. EAs support students and assist behaviour resource, learning support and classroom teachers with instructional and non-instructional tasks. They assist in areas of personal care, teaching and behaviour management.

EAs may be assigned by their supervisor to work in a variety of classrooms and/or school programs such as:
LifeSkills, Prep Program, ENTER, swim programs, field trips, etc.


Qualifications:
Grade 12 education supplemented by Human Services Worker Program certificate and course work in:

  • Behaviour Strategies (Behaviour Management, Behaviour Disorders in Schools)
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
  • Autism Training (POPARD, POPFASD or other approved institutions)
  • Communication Systems (LAMP Words for Life, Touch Chat Word Power, Speak for Yourself)
  • CPR-AED Level C First Aid Certification
  • Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certification


Two years recent experience supporting students with diverse abilities in a structured environment and a variety of complex learning, behavioural and intellectual needs such as chronic health and physical impairments, Autism Spectrum disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder; Commitment to the pursuit of continual learning and recertification as required; French language proficiency if assigned to a French Immersion classroom; ability to model language on communication systems at a child's level, valid Class 5 B.C.

driver's license and license appropriate to the type of equipment/vehicle being operated and a personal vehicle available for use on the job is preferred, ability to work effectively with staff and students; willingness to provide curriculum support to students in academic and elective classes such as shop, cooking, physical education, if assigned by the supervisor; willingness to work in an inclusionary setting supporting differentiated instruction with adapted and modified curriculum; meets the physical requirements of the position including lifting, bending, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds if assigned to a physically-dependent student; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


Duties/Responsibilities:


Duties are performed under the supervision of the school Principal, Vice Principal and the Principal of Inclusive Education or designate; follows the guidance and leadership of the applicable teacher(s):behaviour resource, district support, prep program, learning support, AAC SLP, and classroom teacher; provides support to individual or small groups of students in multiple settings as assigned by the supervisor including: classroom instruction, activities of daily living, and behaviour support for students in accordance with the individual education plan; carries out personal and health care routines as directed; duties may be at the classroom level or across multiple classroom settings; assists students in off-site program activities and work experience activities as required; provides information to school-based team, itinerant staff or relevant agency personnel as requested by School/Program Leaders; participates in student specific training as required, which may include training by nursing support services, physiotherapists and other professionals as necessary; participates in student observation, data collection and implementation of Individual and Behaviour Support Plans; follows Student Learning Plans, Student Safety Plans and Employee Risk Reduction Plans; facilitates inclusion of students with diverse learning needs into class and school activities; commits to building positive relationships with all students; follows proper work procedures, observes all regulations pertinent to the work, maintains a good working relationship with other employees, and cooperates in maintaining a healthy learning and working environment; performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor; student supervision as required by the Principal or Vice Principal.
