Title
Supervisor Maintenance - Operations Services


Scope of Responsibilities

The Supervisor, Maintenance will provide direction to a team of technical maintenance staff and contractors to ensure high quality standards of operations are met while employing a supportive service delivery model that meets and exceeds the needs of schools in the district.

The Supervisor will assist the Regional Manager with the evaluation of system needs, the establishment of system-wide standards, school repair/improvement priorities, school building renewal plans and support long-range planning and development.

The Supervisor will work collaboratively as a member of the management team and reports directly to the Regional Manager, Operations Services.


Competencies Required

The Supervisor, Maintenance shall have the following competencies:
(b) The ability to establish and implement standards and guidelines which maximize the efficient and effective use of trades, contractors and service providers;
(c) The ability to analyze developmental needs and effectively recommend courses of action to address those needs;
(g) The ability to recognize and identify priorities in scheduling of work requirements and staff;
(h) The ability to work in a team environment while leading multiple projects and adapting to frequently changing priorities;
(i) The ability to effectively communicate both internally within Operations Services, externally to other centre departments, and third parties including the "customers" of HRCE;
(j) The ability to provide leadership and direction to subordinate staff to efficiently respond to the needs of schools;
(k) The ability to develop, evaluate, recommend and implement policies and procedures to support the continuing improvement of system standards;
(m) The ability to employ effective problem solving strategies to address issues relating to employee relations, labour relations, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline;
(n) The ability and willingness to learn and utilize technology as it relates to schools;
(o) The ability to promote and maintain confidentiality;
(q) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
(r) The ability to use Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and Power point for the presentation and analysis of information.


Qualifications
(a) Completion of a college or university program in a discipline related to the operation and/or maintenance of facilities (i.e. Journeyperson Certification), or equivalent training and experience;
(b) Minimum five years' experience working in the operation and/or maintenance of facilities;
(c) Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and excellent driving record;
(d) Experience supervising employees in an operations/maintenance environment;
(e) Skilled in Microsoft Office, including; Word, Excel and Outlook;
(f) Experience working in a unionized environment considered an asset;
(g) Project Management certification and experience considered an asset.


Specific Job Components
The Supervisor, Maintenance shall perform those tasks assigned by the Regional Manager, Operations Services.

These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the organization and may include, but not be limited to the following:

(a) Develops procedures and methods for improved property services operations;
(b) Provides first line contact with Building Management supervisors and school sites for matters regarding building and property maintenance;
(c) Provides direction and supervision to maintenance employees and contracted service providers for implementation of safe operations of building and grounds maintenance;(d) Responds to and assigns work orders through computerized tracking systems using SAP;
(e) Implements procedures in support of goals, policies and plans for Operations;
(f) Provides assistance to the manager for the preparation and management of budgets;
(g) Function as part of the management team in carrying out annual performance evaluations for all staff in subordinate roles;
(h) Respond to maintenance and renovation requests from Program department to support students with special needs;
(i) Ensures that all work is done according to standard trade practices, contract specifications, all trade and building codes and applicable health and safety regulations;
(j) Provides effective shift supervision of Maintenance Services staff as per the Collective Agreement;
(k) Develops plans, policies, and procedures for emergency measures in cooperation with
Technology Services and Pupil Transportation;
(l) Provides support and feedback to principals and school administration for acquiring services, information and/or coordination of projects related to maintenance, structural, renovation, mechanical, and environmental issues at the site;
