This position is in Toronto, with potential, limited travel to Armstrong North Tonawanda NY facility as required.

In addition to annual initiatives, the key accountabilities of this position are:

Health and Safety Management

  • Lead the Safety strategy for Armstrong's Toronto Facility.
  • Promote and lead all training that directly contributes to risk reduction and continued development of the caring culture of safety.
  • Continually monitor the effectiveness of the Occupational Health & Safety program and evaluate against expectations and outcomes.
  • Facilitates and supports the development of internal responsibility via oversight of incident reporting, investigations, and inspections.
  • Identify and implement operational health and safety best practice solutions.
  • Research and ensure approval of PPE and Equipment Guarding for manufacturing purposes.
  • Manages WHMIS/SDS database and internal inventory of products.
  • Lead the COVID19 response plan for our Canadian offices and facility.
  • Work with Corporate and other business units to ensure consistency in approach, philosophy, and culture.
  • Build & manage functional relationships with all levels within the organization.
  • Provide advice & counsel on all matters related to Health & Safety within Operations.
  • Coach and support frontline Supervisors to promote safe practices and the ongoing development of the safety culture.
  • Coach and support Managers and employees on a broad range of OH&S functions.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners, resources, and regulators.
  • Identify and implement ways to effectively use data to drive decisions and influence direction of OH&S program development.
  • Development; tracking and auditing processes
  • Responsible for the growth and development of the Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSC)

Process and Procedures

  • Ensure compliance and implementation support on all aspects of health and safety.
  • Chair of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and lead safety improvement initiatives, as applicable
  • Develop Joint Health and Safety Committee minutes notes, and ensure posting/availability for staff.
  • Conduct and coordinate monthly workplace inspections, including both manufacturing facility and office workspaces.
  • Conduct annual audits of the company's health and safety program and update manuals and procedures on an annual basis.
  • Compile and report statistics with regards to program outcomes, injury frequency and modified work.

Role Requirements

  • University Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience working with engineering, manufacturing, and distribution operations in an industrial environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Health and Safety principles, best practices and regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Expert level Knowledge and training in
  • OHSA regulations, AODA, Human Rights and Workplace Safety Insurance Act
  • Injury/Incident Investigation
  • Planned Workplace Inspection or Basic Certification Training
  • Creative problemsolving skills, conflict management within different organizations (centralized and matrix organizational structures)
  • Ability to break down complex problems in a simplified way, conduct root cause analysis and provide clear, wellthoughtout recommendations.
  • Strong, teamoriented leadership skills with presence and a bias for action.
  • Selfdirected with ability to work autonomously and collaboratively and a focus on results.
  • Ability to communicate in an open and authentic manner in all situations.
  • Proven track record of actively coaching, developing, and implementing safe work practices and procedures.
  • Thrive in a dynamic and fast paced environment where change is ongoing.
  • Knowledge of the Manufacturing shop environment and equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Practical experience with a variety of software packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
  • Experience developing and leading teams.
  • Experience in ergonomics, industrial hygiene, LEAN, Six Sigma training are assets.
  • Welldeveloped organizational and time management abilities
  • Can work independently with mínimal supervision while maintaining tight deadlines and juggling multiple projects.
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with external and internal business partners in a professional and engaging manner to ensure a culture of workplace safety.
