The Opportunity


Responsibilities:


  • Receive and investigate complaints involving bylaw violations; issues tickets or compliance orders, advise complainant with respect to action taken, and follows up with complainants when necessary to ensure compliance.
  • Utilize discretion to determine the appropriate course of action when the bylaw has been violated/noncompliance has occurred; ability to make decisions in the field based on legislation, policies, procedures, best practices, and past practices.
  • Maintain record of tickets and infractions for followup and/or prosecution purposes.
  • Assist City departments with the removal of parked/abandoned vehicles, snow removal, business licenses, property checks and various enquiries.
  • Work in cooperation with the local RCMP on criminal offences related to municipal property and property damage reports.
  • Maintain and control exhibits and lost and found items; maintain appropriate records and ensure items are disposed of properly when required.
  • Educate public with respect to municipal bylaws to gain and improve compliance, to ensure the violator fully understands the bylaw, the reasons for it, and the potential penalties.
  • Prepare and deliver reports periodically to the CPO Sergeant with respect to enforcement activities, recommendations for new bylaws, and/or amendments to current bylaws.
  • Safely capture and handle stray or dangerous animals.
  • Comply with and promote all health and safety recommendations and standards to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for oneself and the community.
Education, qualifications, and work experience

  • Diploma in Police Studies, Enforcement, Criminology, or related field combined with two (2) years experience as a bylaw enforcement officer. Combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence.
  • Ability to provide a 5year Driver's Abstract that shows safe and responsible driving behaviour that is satisfactory to the City.
  • Employment is dependent upon successfully obtaining and sustaining an RCMP Enhanced Reliability Clearance.
  • Able to work shiftwork, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Completion of the Community Peace Officer Level II or Municipal Enforcement Officer training course an asset.
  • Animal control experience is an asset.
  • Radar/Lidar training an asset.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), problem solving, and decisionmaking skills with the ability to work under pressure by multitasking and priority setting.
  • Strong customer service skills, very competent in exercising tact, diplomacy, and discretion, and the ability to handle and resolve confrontational situations.
  • Ability to remain professional and calm in stressful situations with the ability to effectively deal with verbally abusive or hostile individuals.
  • Ability to work both independently and collegially in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. as required.
