Overview of the role:


Reporting directly to the VP Network Planning & Engineering, the Director Operational Excellence leads a national group of continuous improvement specialists, industrial engineers, and loss prevention specialists.


The main focus is on defining optimal operational flow and setup, ensuring delivery stations' adherence to processes and standards, leading material handling performance improvement projects and implementing cost reduction initiatives.

We see this role as a center piece of our ability to build an industry leading operational team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of optimal standards for last mile stations and middle mile HUBs (sort layout, load out layout, sort process, staffing models, freight availability, operational schedules, etc.).
  • Build the engineering principles behind capacity management (site capacity, sort capacity, delivery capacity).
  • Lead cost control meetings and develop innovative ways to continuously decrease operational costs, while maintaining and improving quality.
  • Create and implement a recurring station audit process to ensure quality, performance, health and safety, loss prevention and other standards are met.
  • Monitor station performance and work in collaboration with Regional Operations Managers to provide support to stations on specific operational challenges.
  • Identify and oversee material handling equipment (MHE) projects to increase productivity, capacity, and throughput, including sorting automation.
  • Oversee the documentation and management of all operational standard operating procedures (SOP) and contribute to communicate and train stations on these SOP's. Build a team of internal experts on these SOP's.
  • Assemble and build an industry leading engineering team to ensure Intelcom's standards are best in class.
  • Lead the engineering of new building expansion, in regards to layout, equipment, operational flow, etc.
  • Contribute to Manual and Automated Sort Centers of Excellence.
  • Lead the Loss Previention team to ensure we continuously decrease lost parcels and implement industry leading prevention methods and tools.
  • Build weekly and monthly operational KPI review to identify trends and create action plans for remediation.
  • Visit delivery stations and sortation hubs frequently to ensure comprehension of the operations and get buy in from operations team on key initiatives.
  • Contribute to Continuous Improvement teams by identifying key initiatives and measuring success.
  • Report status and progress through strategic KPI's and reporting sessions to operations management team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, business administration (operations management, supply chain) or mechanical engineering.
  • Graduate degree in management, supply chain or engineering is an asset.
  • 10+ years in operations, experience in the transportation industry is required.
  • 5+ years in a role related to operational excellence, engineering, or performance improvement.
  • 2+ years in an automated warehouse or HUB environment.
  • High proficiency in Excel.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and simulation software is an asset.
  • Detail oriented and strong ability to keep people accountable.
  • Strong leadership presence with ability to vision set and manage through influence.
