Qualifications:

Education

  • Registered with Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Pharmacy Technician
Diploma from a recognized Community College

Experience

  • 3 years hospital pharmacy practice experience preferred

Required Skills:

Drug Distribution

  • Accurate order entry and patient profile maintenance of electronic health record
  • Distribution and other drug stock activities, prescription transfers and refills
  • Coordination of drug delivery
  • Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC), wardstock replenishment and maintenance of medication stock levels in patient care areas
  • Narcotic and Controlled Drug distribution and record keeping
  • Daily audit of narcotic sheets, if applicable
  • Investigation of narcotic discrepancies
  • Pharmacy narcotic counts
  • Expiry date checks
  • Instruct patients where special requirements have been identified, within scope of practice
  • Crash cart replenishment as required
  • Drug prepackaging
  • Inventory control
Dispensing Medication

  • Delegated dispensing activities, verifying prescriptions, dispensing and check
  • Collect and review prescriptions and requisitions
  • Computerized order entry of prescriptions for dispensing, utilizing applicable hospital Automatic Stop Order (ASO) and Automatic Substitution policies
  • Responsible for investigation of missing doses on the nursing units
  • Housekeeping duties to maintain orderly pharmacy environment
  • Compound and manufacture drug products as required
  • Maintain and file prescription data
  • Report promptly any medication errors to the pharmacist and complete or ensure completion of appropriate documentation
  • Communicate promptly to the pharmacist any patient care issues that arise
Material Management

  • Maintenance of drug stock quotas
  • Monitoring stock levels to ensure sufficient quantities for optimal operation
  • Prepare and send purchase orders and contact suppliers as required
  • Receive and check drug purchases
  • Record maintenance
  • Rotating Stock and monitoring of expiry dates
  • Invoicing drug items to other hospitals, pharmacies or departments
  • Third party billing (e.g., Cancer Care Ontario)
  • Participation in annual departmental inventory
  • Review and maintain organizational buying group contracts
  • Electronic update of drug and vendor data
  • Process buying group contract refund claims
  • Coordinate and control expired drug inventory
  • Ensure medication packaging complies with standards and to by utilized by electronic health record

  • Report Concerns about Safety issues
  • Change practices to enhance safety
  • Ask for help when needed
  • Enhance teamwork
  • Review and follow Safety Literature
Other

  • Follow the Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Technicians developed by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) and adopted by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP)
  • Communicate promptly to the pharmacist any drug information questions from physicians or nursing staff
  • Communicate with pharmacist, nursing and technician staff to ensure the efficient operation of the pharmacy department, and optimal patient care
  • Support Quality & Risk Management initiatives and identify opportunities for personal and professional improvement
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing education
  • Demonstrate professional attitude towards coworkers and hospital staff
  • Workload measurement data collection and statistics maintenance
  • Tabulation of monthend workload measurement data
  • Perform additional related duties as may be assigned
  • Participation in regular departmental staff meetings
  • Participate in the education of nursing students, pharmacy / pharmacy technician students and the orientation of new staff

  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Computer literate; experience with the Meditech System preferred
  • Welldeveloped pharmaceutical calculation skill
  • Experienced aseptic technique and handling of chemotherapeutic agents
  • Experienced in drug order entry
  • Knowledgeable of drug distribution systems
  • Experienced with drug purchasing and inventory control
  • Ability to participate in a regular oncall rotation as required
