SCOPE

Reporting to the Department Administrator, Political Science, the incumbent is responsible for increasing recruitment and retention in the Political Science undergraduate programs via the provision of advising services, both individually and in groups, as well opportunities for professional and academic development for undergraduate students.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate Political Science students regarding course selections, course requirements, and other academic issues.
  • Evaluate students' academic records for degree and program requirements.
  • Provide timely and appropriate responses to student requests and refer them to the Student Academic Services unit for final vetting.
  • Organize events for Political Science current and prospective undergraduate students; liaise with other university offices and external participants for the purpose of event organization; promote events to the student population.
  • Represent the department on various internal and external meetings and/or committees, which deal with recruitment, retention, and admission of undergraduate students in Political Science. This includes participation in recruitment/Open House activities, orientation/advising sessions, planning/facilitating workshops for students, and special events.
  • Organize and conduct new student orientation sessions and keep abreast of university and faculty new student services.
  • Maintain active communication with students and university departments and services.
  • Proactively counsel/inform program directors, chairs, staff members, and the student population about academic programs, rules and regulations.
  • Participate in the establishment of team objectives and operational plans for recruitment, advising, retention and readmission of the department's undergraduate students relating to academic programs and regulations.
  • Analyze data and provide information to the department, faculty, students, and other individuals where appropriate. Make recommendations to the Chair and to Student Academic Services, regarding trends, practices, and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and two to four years of related work experience in an academic setting. Previous work or educational experience in academic advising considered an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of the academic rules and regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Science and of Concordia University considered an asset.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken French as well as good French reading comprehension.
  • Good knowledge (Intermediate level) of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Student Information System (SIS) considered an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to deal effectively with prospective, current and former students and alumni, with faculty and staff members and internal and external departments and committees.
  • Proven writing, analytical, and organization skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure for extended periods of time, to take initiative and work independently and also within a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to conduct orientation and information sessions and workshops to potential and current students.
  • Proven ability to coordinate projects and work within strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work and advise with discretion when dealing with sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours occasionally (e.g. special events, extraordinary circumstances).

Since this position supports academic and administrative functions of the university, proficiency in English and French, as indicated, is required.
