Multi-Cultural Liaison Worker with Cantonese Fluency

(Term School and Student Support B)

Hours of Work: 7 hours/day, Mon-Fri


Salary:
$33.26 per hour +18.6% in lieu of benefits


Multicultural Liaison Workers act as liaison among school, family, and the community, and help school staff understand the concerns and needs of each cultural/linguistic community.

Currently, there are MCLWs who can provide support in Cantonese/Mandarin, Filipino/Tagalog, Korean, Punjabi/Hindi, Spanish, and Vietnamese.


In this role, you will:

Assist students from Chinese speaking ethnic communities to understand and derive the maximum benefit from the school system and to help parents and custodians understand the school system, their responsibilities and how to participate in the education of their students

Assist school and district staff with the educational and social development of students, including interviewing students and relaying information and judgment of the student's responses

Provide interpretation in one-to-one and group meetings, public meetings and public inquiries by telephone or in person, and other situations as required

Act as a liaison amongst district staff, school counselors, teachers, administrators, students, local custodians, and parents in the country of origin

Provide translation and interpretation service between school staff and students/families in English and Cantonese

Provide professional development around cultural competency to other district staff

Perform other work within the job band as assigned


Qualifications:

Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education

Minimum of 2 years of related experience

Must possess extensive knowledge of the problems involved in cultural adaptation in an educational setting

Sound knowledge of school and community resources available to International students, and working knowledge of general policies, curriculum and operation of public school districts in BC

Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, such as staff, students and families

Proficiency MS Office and MS Outlook

Must have a valid B.C. driver's license, access to a vehicle and be willing to travel throughout the district

Fluency in Cantonese and written Traditional Chinese required

Fluency in Mandarin and Simplified Chinese an asset


Knowledge/Skills:

Sound knowledge of school and community resources available to International students, and working knowledge of general policies, curriculum and operation of public school districts in BC

Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, such as staff, students and families

Itinerant Assignment:


A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties.

Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Human Resources may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
