The Court of Appeal of Alberta hears appeals in all areas of law from decisions of the Court of King's Bench, the Alberta Court of Justice, and provincial administrative and regulatory bodies.
The Court of Appeal sits in both Edmonton and Calgary. Members of the Court also sit as members of the Courts of Appeal for the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Role Responsibilities
Legal counsel at the Court of Appeal assist the Court in the efficient administration of justice through the provision of legal and administration services. Under the general supervision of and reporting to the Chief Justice of Alberta and the Court's Executive Director/Registrar, this position assists one or two Court of Appeal Justices.
Legal counsel help the Court prepare for the hearing of appeals and applications, conducting research and legal analysis, preparing legal memoranda, and editing and proofreading judgments. They review appeal materials and consult with the Justices on legal issues that may require additional research and assign and oversee that research by Court students. This role will also be accountable to support the Chief Justice with strategic communications and speech writing. This includes research and drafting speeches. Exceptional speech writing skills are required.
Legal counsel must stay apprised of changes in legislation and case law. They maintain and update internal legal resources for use by the judiciary and judicial staff. They may draft and/or edit papers, speeches or presentation materials as requested. In addition, legal counsel may participate in Court administration committee work and help manage the student program. Legal counsel act as mentors to the articling students.
Legal counsel must be able to adapt to change and work with evolving technologies such as e-filing, paperless court records and electronic hearings.
Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills are essential, as are exemplary written and verbal communication skills. Well-developed legal research skills are required. Legal counsel must be able to work in a highly demanding environment with limited supervision.
Qualifications
A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) Degree supplemented with a minimum of four (4) years of related legal experience. Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for membership is required.
Related legal experience includes extensive experience with Canadian legal research tools, well-developed research and analytical skills, and exceptional legal writing skills. It also includes prior court or tribunal experience.
A strong academic standing is essential and an LLM is an asset. Law journal and other legal writing experience would be beneficial and would be considered an asset. Supervisory experience is considered an asset. Although not required, knowledge of French is considered an asset.
