About the opportunity


The Principal, Audit & Accounting will lead and complete research, guidance and thought leadership with a primary focus on projects related to financial reporting and audit & assurance standards.

The individual will also offer essential insights into the impact of emerging forms of reporting and assurance.

The individual will work in close collaboration with other members of the RGS department and where appropriate, across CPA Canada and with our provincial partners.


Areas of focus include:

  • Changes and developments in Canadian Auditing Standards and Other Assurance Standards, and the impact of such changes on audit & assurance practitioners in Canada
  • Changes and developments in domestic accounting standards, including Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and Accounting Standards for NotforProfit Organizations (ASNPO), and the impact of such changes on Canadian stakeholders
  • Changes and developments in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and the impact of such changes on Canadian public companies
  • Canadian public company regulatory reporting, including quarterly and annual financial statements, management's discussion and analysis, and additional financial reports required to comply with securities legislation
  • Global audit quality trends and developments related to the value of the audit as well as business trends and capital market developments, including but not limited to environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters and technological advances (e.g., blockchain, cryptocurrencies).

_ CPA Canada supports a hybrid working environment. This role can be aligned to any of CPA Canada's offices; Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa or Burnaby. A remote working environment within Canada may also be considered._

What you'll do

In this role, you will:

  • Facilitate meetings of volunteer advisory groups and committees, both as a technical expert and skilled facilitator, to bring together people and ideas, resulting in timely and highquality research, guidance and thought leadership.
  • Maintain an indepth understanding of business trends, audit and assurance & external reporting developments in Canada and globally which may impact current and future assurance and reporting practices and recommend appropriate project proposals.
  • Engage with and expand the network of professional contacts (internal and external) to help advance organizational objectives.
  • Present at and participate in relevant panel discussions and presentations, national and international conferences, attend educational and networking events, and deepen existing relationships.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments at CPA Canada (translation, design, web, marketing & communication teams) to oversee publication and promotion of resources, guidance, and thought leadership.
  • Provide input on departmental budget and manage project budget, including author/consultant costs & expense reportSupport other RGS and CPA Canada strategic projects and initiatives, as necessary.

What we're looking for

  • Undergraduate degree and a CPA certification or designation
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in public practice (audit and/or assurance, including sustainability assurance), internal audit, and/or financial accounting
  • Indepth knowledge of Canadian Auditing Standards and Other Assurance Standards and the key concepts underlying these standards
  • Knowledge of domestic and international accounting standards (IFRS, ASPE and ASNPO)
  • Knowledge of, and intellectual curiosity related to the following topics:
  • Emerging technologies impacting the audit (e.g., data analytics, blockchain, crypto-assets, AI)
  • Emerging forms of external reporting (e.g., sustainability reporting, KPIs and nonGAAP measures, forwardlooking information) and the related assurance services
  • International audit developments and audit reform
  • System and organizational controls
  • Ability to translate complex messages and recommendations into concise proposals, reports and presentations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and problemsolving abilities
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong project management skills in combination with a strong personal initiative, agility and resourcefulness
