    Job Description

    This position will be assigned to Surgical Clinics/Minor Procedures (Thyroid, Urology/Transition Related Surgery, Anorectal, General Surgery) based on operational needs.

    Summary of duties, but not limited to:

    • Responsible for providing direct nursing care, collaborating with other health professionals and participate in the organization of activities in the provision of patient care
    • Prepares and ensures proper set up of examination rooms, equipment and supplies.
    • Confirms the reason for the visit (chief complaint), and prepares the patient for examination/treatment
    • Obtains and documents vital signs, health, and social histories
    • Assists in the provision of procedural care for patients undergoing minor procedures (ie. cystoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, laryngoscopy)
    • Triage's patient phone calls, gives advice and responds to patient problems in accordance to the standards established by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
    • Provides routine nursing support as directed by physicians and approved as standard practices (e.g., procedural tests, positioning, assistance, specimen identification).
    • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team to provide pre/postoperative teaching and care to ambulatory surgical patients.
    • Liaises with clinicians, clerical and support staff to ensure team and unit functions efficiently and effectively and ensures continuity of patient care
    • The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) will practice within his/her full scope of practice in the clinic setting as outlined in the Standards of Practice by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
    • As a role model and champion you will work to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.
    • May be required to work in various areas of the Surgical Program

    Qualifications
    • Registered Practical Nurse Diploma
    • Current Certificate of Competence (RPN) from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
    • • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required, current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset
    • Must have a minimum of 2-3 years of current clinical/work experience in a surgical setting.
    • Current work experience in an ambulatory setting with minor procedures, operating room and/or surgical experience preferred.
    • Successful completion of Nursing Physical Assessment Course and Administration of Medication course and proven competence according to the standard of practice from the College of Nurses of Ontario
    • Successful completion of the IV Therapy/IV initiation and maintenance course for RPN with current competency
    • Proven competence in initiation and maintenance of intravenous therapy
    • Critical Care and Health Assessment and Ambulatory Surgical Nursing course preferred
    • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook), experience with Electronic Medical Record.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
    • Excellent patient assessment, triaging skills and teaching experience.
    • Demonstrated leadership and effective interpersonal and skills
    • Ability to organize time and set priorities effectively.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women's College Hospital.
    • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all.
