    The RoleResponsibilities** a. assists Lab Facilitators as needed in their prep duties for 2nd or 3rd year courses;
b. supervises student assistants including providing orientation and training in job specific duties;
c. acquires, maintains and prepares living protist cultures;
d. prepares media, subcultures and accurately crosses a variety of
- _Drosophila_ strains;
e. makes signs and text for displays using the computer;
f. ensures that perishable biological materials are acquired within appropriate time frames;
g. ensures equipment and instruments are in good working order, including performing minor equipment repairs, and maintains service records;
h. constructs or modifies laboratory equipment when necessary;
i. sets up and maintains salt water and fresh water aquariums and maintains the greenhouse;
j. ensures compliance with WHMIS legislation including preparation of appropriate documentation;
k. receives deliveries, and puts away or notifying the applicable Lab Facilitator of the arrival of their material, updating prep room SDS;
l. maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares chemical solutions and prepares chemical waste for removal
m. carries out emergency procedures in the event of a chemical spill, fire or injury as per SDS instructions;
n. maintaining a clean, tidy and safe prep room, ensuring disposal compliance of materials as per appropriate SOP's.


2. Provides technical assistance.
- a. assists with testing experiments for inclusion in laboratory manuals and in 2nd or 3rd year courses;
b. assists with lab examination preparation, set-up and clean-up;
c. maintains resource materials such as books, catalogues, files, and microscope slides;
d. properly carries out dissections for weekly lab demonstrations and lab exams.
e. gathers and prepares supplies, prepares solutions and gathers consumables required for weekly lab switchover.


3. Coordinates the maintenance, care and control of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- a. orders, receives and checks materials and supplies, maintaining inventory and processing payments;
b. maintains resource material such as catalogues, information files, books, microscope slides, models, charts and posters;
c. cares for laboratory animals.


4. Performs other related duties.
- a. trained in Biosafety for safe work operations in CL2 level labs as per PHAC's guidelines;
b. maintains currency in relation to college biology courses.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal),
  • A good working knowledge of the course content, operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, and of modern techniques pertaining to the instruction of Biology courses at the first and second year level or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of a biology laboratory, including GHS regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge in the field of Biology.
  • Proven ability to effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a minimum direct supervision as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
