About Us:


The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) Undergraduate Student Services (UGSS) unit, provides a wide-ranging suite of services to support the operations and administration of all undergraduate programs in FIMS in the areas of undergraduate curiculum, student engagement, student recruitment, as well as any initiatives focused on outreach, engagement and retention of future students, current students, and alumni.

The unit is responsible for providing high quality academic advising and career services, programs and supports to enrich the quality of the undergraduate student experience in the Faculty.

We strive for excellence in delivering the best student experience through a student-centric, supportive, caring, accessible and knowledgeable student experience environment, helping students design, modify and achieve their academic and career goals, from admission through to graduation.


Responsibilities:


The Career Services Officer - Employer Specialist will perform a wide range of administrative duties to support a program, research project, department or other business unit.


Accountabilities:


The Career Services Officer - Employer Specialist plays a vital role in fostering new relationships with key industry partners and employers to actively support the Faculty of Information and Media Studies' objective of expanding experiential learning opportunities for students.

This involves conducting placement site visits, whether virtual, by phone, or in person, to enhance connections with organizations and community partners.

The role closely monitors student performance and ensures the overall quality of placements, ensuring that all legal and administrative requirements are fulfilled.

This role participates in the teaching and evaluation of curricular career development education coursework for the Media and Communication Studies (MACS) internship module and short-term internship programs to align the faculty's goal of increasing both participation and placements in experiential learning opportunities.

The Career Services Officer - Employer Specialist collaborates with the Undergraduate Student Services team to plan and coordinate various events related to career development.

The role also extends its support to assessments and reporting, enhancing the overall effectiveness of career services within the faculty.


  • Qualifications
    Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in Media and Communications field

Experience:


  • 2+ years of related experience in an academic setting liaising and building strong relationships with industry
  • Proven sales, marketing, and/or public relations experience with selling a program, product, or concept
  • Human Resources or career counselling experience, specifically in relation to recruiting highly qualified personnel and providing comprehensive career and job search counselling, resume development and interview skills preferred

  • Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
  • Ability to work independently and exercise a high degree of initiative, innovation, and good judgment in decisionmaking
  • Familiarity with best practices for maintaining, seeking out and developing business relationships and partnerships with the ability to generate additional work placement opportunities
  • Customer service skills (listening to determine needs and concerns, building trust, responding tactfully and in a helpful way, referring to other services as directed)
  • Ability to source leads, cold call and use other methods to connect with external partners
  • Ability to assess client's needs, suggest options, overcome objections, and move forward with partnerships
  • Knowledge of industry with an ability to match their needs with needs of students
  • A welldefined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Customer service skills with a desire to achieve results in a professional and timely manner
  • Detailoriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability to create a positive impression while interacting with others and responding to inquiries, by telephone, in person or electronically
  • Demonstrated team building skills (collaborating, reaching consensus, keeping others informed)
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to establish
