    Job Description:


    NVITanticipates a requirement for a term instructor for the Carpenter Foundation Program and invites applications from qualified individuals.

    The program will be offered in Merritt Campus beginning on September 6, 2023, and running through to April 2024


    Job Summary:

    This position has instructional responsibilities such as: teaching provincial curriculum; preparing and presenting classroom lectures, course delivery and assessment materials; providing practical demonstrations; and working collaboratively within our Trades team and with the Dean.

    The program curriculum will follow SkilledTradesBC Foundation Carpentry objectives and student learning outcomes, including:

    general safety rules and safe work practices; identifying different types and uses of drawings and blueprints; use of hand tools and portable power tools; interpretation of engineered flooring systems and truss drawings; calculation and construction of wall forms and concrete details, including residential structure foundations; installation of sill plates, beams, pony walls, floor joists, bridging, and floor sheathing; and calculating quantities and costs of framing lumber.

    Other instructional responsibilities will include review and preparation with the students for the ITA Level 1 Technical Exam, and all administrative responsibilities including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluation.


    Requirements/Qualifications:
    BC Trades Certificate of Qualification with Inter-Provincial Red Seal in Carpentry required or out of province equivalent.

    Minimum five years of recent work experience as a journeyman carpenter with strong and diverse skills gained in the construction industry.

    Supervisory experience is an asset.

    Teaching experience/apprentice supervision (preferably with First Nations adult learners) along with either the BC teaching certification or completion of either Native Adult Instructors Diploma (NAID) or Provincial Instructors Diploma (PID), or a willingness to complete is desired.

    Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

    To be successful in this role you will have well developed interpersonal and decision-making skills with the ability to foster good stakeholder and team relationships, connecting to management and key staff.

    Ability to work and problem-solve independently with well developed report writing and com puter skills.
    Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people's cultural awareness.
