Overview


The Fraser-Cascade School District is nestled in one of the most beautiful and rugged areas of British Columbia, stretching from Harrison Mills and the community of Sts'ailes in the Northwest and Eastward through the Fraser Canyon to Boston Bar.

It includes Harrison Hot Springs, the District of Kent, including Agassiz.

It extends up the Fraser River from there to the town of Hope and up the southern section of the Fraser Canyon along Highway 1 to the communities of Yale, Spuzzum, and Boston Bar.

In total, the district serves a regional population of approximately 15,000 residents. Fourteen bands are also part of our School District.

These include Boothroyd Indian Band, Boston Bar First Nations, Chawathil First Nations, Cheam First Nations, Peters Indian Band, Seabird Island Indian Band, Shwx'owhamel First Nation, Spuzzum First Nation, Sq'ewa:
lxw First Nation, Sq'ewlets First Nation, Sts'ailes, Union Bar Band, Yale First Nation and the Samahquam First Nation. Approximately 40% of the student population is of indigenous ancestry.


In total, the district has four elementary schools, one K-12 school, two high schools, two vibrant alternate education schools, as well as online continuing education opportunities for students.

The Position


Reporting to the District Vice Principal of Inclusive Education and Mental Health, the Community Outreach Coordinator will work with the Safer Schools Team, principals, School Based Teams (SBTs), RCMP, probation and social workers, First Nations community staff, the ICY Team and community service providers to develop and execute a strategy that will provide wrap-around intervention and supports for youth targeted by, engaged or at risk of engaging in organized crime/gang activity, serious violence, crime and/or exploitation.

This will include developing the School District's Outdoor Education initiative focused on engaging significantly in-risk students and families by providing these in-risk youth outdoor education experiences that influence their commitment to healthy life choices.

The focus will be on a program that serves secondary students across the Fraser Cascade School District and outreach to youth currently not engaged in school.


Duties will include the following:

Provide direct supervision of all staff and students on all outdoor excursions to maintain high levels of safety.


Acquire and provide direction supervision for Canadian Mountain Guides, who are trained and supervised by ACMG (The Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) - a professional association of trained and certified guides and instructors.

These additional staff may be hired for the specific needs of outdoor mountain excursions for students.


Research and develop a community outreach strategy that includes an Outdoor Education Component as well as supports, services, staff training, and community connections.


Oversee strategy coordination throughout the district including developing a framework that will assist with identifying in-risk students and families requiring support, providing targeted communications to schools, families, and students, and managing the service delivery infrastructure with District staff.


Identify, recommend, and co-develop action plans regarding potential partnership opportunities and new programs and services to support the community outreach strategy.

Provide reporting as requested by the School District and the Ministry of Education and Childcare.


Liaise with the Safe Schools team and RCMP to monitor gang activity trend information and other risk factor information including from social media sources.

Collaborate with other high-priority districts on program approaches and strategies.


Liaise with community agencies to identify students and families in need of support, make referrals and support students to access the supports.

Arrange transportation of students with the School District bussing coordinator.


Identify community-specific reasons why youth are attracted to gang-related activity and harmful and violent behaviours, and work with district staff to address those influences.

Provide in-service for district staff around violent and gang-related activities, sexual exploitation including trafficking and grooming.
