  • As a Heavy Equipment Technician, you are an energetic selfstarter, performing repairs and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
Contributing to a strong safety culture, your primary duties will include:


  • Inspect, maintain, and repair a wide variety of medium/heavy and/or dieselpowered trucks, automatic transmissions, auxiliary mounted equipment, propane burner systems, trailers, and light/heavy construction equipment (examples include Cummins, International, Freightliner, Kenworth, Ford, Caterpillar, John Deere, Bobcat, Kubota, Toro).
  • Perform Safety and Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP), troubleshoot, repair and overhaul various components of these vehicles.
  • Provide technical training and guidance to Apprentices and Serviceman.
  • Adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems, using hand and power tools.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure work meets manufacturers' specifications.
  • Repair electronic and hydraulics systems.
  • Complete and sign fleet logs, work orders and service records.

Qualifications

  • A Heavy Equipment Technician certificate or equivalent Interprovincial Red Seal (as recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board).
  • Heavy duty onroad (Truck & Transport certification) and offroad certification.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current charges or suspensions pending.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit within 2 months of hire.
  • Currently have or the ability to obtain a valid Class 3 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and ability to obtain air brake endorsement (Q) within 3 months of hire.
  • A Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) license, or the ability to obtain this within 2 months of hire and sign off government paperwork for CVIP vehicles.
  • An original driver's abstract no older than 60 days from all jurisdictions in which you have been a licensed driver in the past 2 years.
  • Ability to complete Audiometric testing.
  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) is considered an asset.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic programs and creating clear and concise work order job notes and reports of completed work.

Working Conditions:
This position works in a shop environment with moving vehicles, parts and tools, noise, chemicals and vehicle fumes. Some work must be performed outdoors occasionally, or in tight spaces requiring physically demanding postures. Must have the ability to lift 20kg (45lbs) daily.


Pre-employment Requirements

  • You will be required to have a standard set of mechanic hand tools.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Out-Of-Schedule rate for both unions: $ per hour
This position is presently paid at an Out-of-Schedule rate to reflect current market conditions. Should market conditions change, the salary may be reviewed and may revert to the base rate.
