The Ontario Correctional Institute, Ministry of the Solicitor General, is seeking an individual with strong administrative skills to provide reception, switchboard, and mail services to staff, inmates and the general public.


Effective January 1st, 2024 the salary range for this position is $23.69 to $27.32 per hour in compliance with OPSEU Correctional Bargaining Unit collective agreement provisions.

The new rates, effective retroactive to January 1, 2024, were recently confirmed and dates for implementation of the new salary rates are still to be determined.

What can I expect to do in this role?:

  • screen and direct multiple-line telephone switchboard calls to the institution;
- receive visitors, verify identification, and notify appropriate staff member of visitors;
- update/access internal phone/staff list;
- process incoming mail as well as regular and courier outgoing mail;
- maintain the computerized visitors register;
- additional duties as assigned.


How do I qualify?:


Administrative Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have experience with switchboards (i.e. stacking, forwarding and transferring calls to various departments).
  • You are familiar with reception processes and practices to greet and direct visitors.
  • You understand mailing procedures (i.e. weigh and metering mail, log registered mail, and sort incoming/outgoing mail).

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You can screen and direct multipleline telephone calls, take messages, and page appropriate staff.
  • You are able to answer inquiries and receive visitors.
  • You have demonstrated professionalism, tact, and courtesy when responding to callers and visitors.
  • You have good written communication skills in order to draft memos and other documents.

Computer Skills:


  • You are proficient with computer software such as word processing in order to prepare various documents.
  • You can use database in order to input and retrieve information to respond to inquiries.
  • You have demonstrated keyboarding skills in order to provide typing assistance in a timely manner.

Analytical, Problem-Solving, and Reasoning Skills:


  • You are able to prioritize incoming calls as well as recognize and respond appropriately to unusual calls.
  • You can determine what information is authorized to be provided to callers.
  • You can ensure calls are directed to correct program area.
  • You have experience sorting incoming and outgoing mail (i.e. determine appropriate method of delivery and identify correct destination of incorrectly addressed mail).

Organizational Skills:
You can prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment and complete assigned work within established time frames.
