Reporting to the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Assistant is responsible for providing assistance in the Cool Aid Dispensary.

The Pharmacy Assistant will help to provide medications to clients, assist with measuring, compounding, packaging, and distributing medications, maintaining patient records, maintaining inventory and aid in pharmacy operations.


As part of the interdisciplinary team, the Pharmacy Assistant will use a harm reduction approach to help the clinic and the pharmacy promote healthy lifestyles for clients and meet their medical needs.

The Pharmacy Assistant will respect and maintain the privacy and dignity of the health centre clients and ensure confidentiality at all times.

A narrow selection of the larger scope and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • Provides assistance to the pharmacist in dispensing medications.
  • Enters prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Maintains client medication profiles.
  • Counts/measures medications and puts them into containers.
  • Maintains packaging and compounding records.
  • Assists in the manufacturing of compounded ointments/creams/lotions.
  • Prepackages tablets and other dosage forms for clinic or patient use.
  • Performs duties relevant to maintenance of inventory.
  • Maintains perpetual inventory records for specific types of inventory.
  • Verifies inventory levels on an as needed basis.
  • Keeps track of expiration dates and segregates expired goods for disposal or return to supplier.
  • Performs a variety of general clerical duties.
  • Schedules and maintains workflow.
  • Bills third party insurers.
  • Processes and maintain files and records.
  • Processes required documentation.
  • Provides orientation assistance for new employees and students.
  • Performing other duties relevant to pharmacy or clinic operation, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Relevant experience preferred.

Education

  • Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Assistant Program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
To be successful in this role, is it key to have the following:

  • The ability to work effectively and respectfully vulnerable populations.
  • A good understanding of a harm reduction model of care.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow written/verbal instruction.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with clinic and pharmacy staff.

Requirements:

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Record Check must be completed prior to commencement of employment.
