Position Description:
- The Howell Lab at The Hospital for SickChildren
Job responsibilities:
**_
Experimental_**- Provide bacterial genetics support to lab. Clone plasmids and develop new strains for projects.
- Develop fluorescently tagged constructs for confocal imaging.
- Localize fluorescently tagged proteins via confocal and/or TEM microscopy.
- Determine protein location via subcellular fractionation and Western blot analysis.
- Express and purify protein from bacterial, yeast, and mammalian cell lines.
- Aid in the development of new expression and purification protocols.
- Develop new assays for the characterization of protein products.
- Provide technical assistance for a variety of diversified basic laboratory techniques.
Administrative_**- Assist in developing, devising, or improving existing methods, practices, and procedures.
- Order and maintain inventories of supplies, chemical stocks, software, and equipment.
- Coordinate experiments between collaborating labs.
- Support and/or train other lab personnel.
- Maintain and oversee laboratory equipment.
- Uphold safety practices and act as safety representative for the lab.
Here¿s what you¿ll need:
- Master¿s degree with 3 years¿ working experience, or a BSc degree with 5 years working experience in Microbiology, Molecular biology, Biochemistry, or Structural Biology.
- Experience with bacterial genetics (PCR, gene cloning, plasmid design, and sitedirected mutagenesis)
- Experience with CRISPR is an asset
- Experience with confocal and/or TEM microscopy as well as fluorescent tagging techniques is an asset.
- Experience with standard biochemical, microbiological, and molecular biological lab techniques.
- Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification from bacterial and mammalian hosts.
- Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communications.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Committed to continuous learning and improvement.
- High attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
