Position Summary:


The Social Media and Issues Management Strategist has a university-wide role in risk mitigation and issues management in addition to managing Laurier's overall social media strategy and accounts.

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Issues Management, this position supports the director in developing and executing risk mitigation strategies in response to issues and managing social media.


This position provides strategic communications support with highly confidential and sensitive matters involving members of the senior leadership team, including the president, provost and vice-presidents.

In terms of responding to issues and preparing communications, this position is expected to maintain a calm presence while working in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.


This position is responsible for updating Laurier's official social media accounts, creating original social media content and graphics (captions, graphics, videos, pictures, etc.), helping create and shape Laurier's overall social media strategy, and developing and implementing social media campaigns.

As well, monitoring Laurier's social media accounts, spotting potentially sensitive and crisis management issues and reporting it to supervisors and managers, and supporting efforts to protect Laurier overall reputation and brand.

Further, responsibility for social media content and conversations that heavily impacts and shapes the university's reputation and brand.

A key component of this role is building relationships. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining trusting relationships with senior leadership, faculty and colleagues across the university.

This position is responsible for attending university-wide meetings related to issues management and social media.

This position is responsible for staying on top of ongoing issues as well as providing support to the director in forecasting issues that could impact the university.


This position will also be required to assist with a variety of writing and general communications activities that support the External Relations department and the university.

This position is responsible for supporting communications plans for university-wide initiatives and priorities, ensuring timeliness and appropriate prioritization of written and verbal internal and external communications.

This position is responsible for ensuring consistency of messaging, tone and voice, as well as impeccable editorial quality, across all of the university's communications.

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus.

The incumbent provides issues management and social media expertise regarding strategy and communications to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, the Milton campus, and external partners.

Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.
