THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Forest Products (WFP) has an exciting opportunity for a
Co-op Student (4-8-month term) focused on Product Analysis.


What You'll Do:

Reporting to and assisting the Director, Product Optimization and working closely with mill and sales management, the Co-op Student will perform ongoing analysis to support operational and strategic decision making on key product, program, manufacturing and log decisions.

Specifically, this Co-op Student will undertake product studies, developing key inputs and presenting the results clearly to management. Key outputs from this analysis will inform mill program, log sorting and log purchase decisions.


Work Environment:
This role is to be performed in person at our Vancouver Corporate Office.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Fiber Optimization & Selection

  • Employing an integrated approach that begins in the forest, work with our logging and manufacturing team to identify the raw materials that will yield the engineering properties of Mass Timber products that customers require.
  • Work with mill Quality Control and Management to develop the requirements and controls to reliably produce the products that meet specifications in the most costeffective manner.

Analytics

  • Work with Finance, Manufacturing and Sales to ensure up to date cost and revenue data for simulations
  • Provide timely key inputs from simulations to generate guidance on log purchase and sorting decisions
  • Work developing market size analysis related to new products in conjunction with Director of Marketing & Product Management

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • 3rd or 4th year Coop student working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Wood Sciences, Forestry or Engineering
  • Experience working in quality control, coordination, sales, forestry or production supervision in lumber manufacturing, preferably at a primary sawmill or engineered wood products plant

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Good analytical skills
  • Good organizational and timemanagement skills
  • Good interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to excel in a highly interactive team environment
  • Excellent computer skills (particularly with Microsoft Excel, Visual Basic, Solver, Pivot Tables, etc.)
  • Experience with relational databases (MS Access, SQL, etc.) considered an asset
  • Ability to understand and use statistical analysis processes
