Position Summary


Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families, the Communication Specialist will be responsible for a wide range of comprehensive communication functions by providing support to the following key activities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of communication strategies for the First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO) including external, internal, social media, and media relations.
  • Responsible for maintaining a visually appealing and userfriendly website, as well as overseeing its ongoing maintenance and management.
  • Synthesize and translate technical content into plain language social media posts to engage the audience across all social media platforms including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok.
  • Develop and publish approved social media content across social media channels.
  • Assist with the development of FNFAO workshop and program materials (posters, brochures, certificates, social media graphics and design, etc.)
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, and statements as directed.
  • Assist with the coordination of press conferences, events, and media workshops as it relates to the FNFAO.
  • Prepare speaking notes on various First Nations issues upon request.
  • Coordinate the development and distribution of clear messaging for the FNFAO that is consistent with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs mandates and media presence.
  • Assist with the development of reports and other external publications.
  • Share relevant media scans with FNFAO management.
  • Collaborate with FNFAO management to create and edit videos for social media purposes, education and awareness campaigns, and various FNFAO activities.
  • Attend community events to capture photos and videos as directed.
  • Maintain a photo/video library to support media content and communication materials.
  • Maintain an inventory of communication equipment and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Journalism, Public Relations, Creative Communications or equivalent experience and abilities.
  • Minimum two years' experience and excellent journalism, and public relations skills with strong multitasking ability.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare system and health services.
  • Experience working with and in First Nations.
  • Ability to write clearly and creatively within tight deadlines, and adaptable to changing priorities and projects.
  • Ability to write in a variety of styles (straight news, promotion, advertising, human interest etc.);
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively as a part of an interdisciplinary team of professionals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Proficient use of Adobe Creative Cloud software, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.
  • Experience working with online platforms including WordPress, Canva, MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, Moodle.
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Zoom, Slack, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Able to work flexible hours and travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
