Position Description:

Communications Advisor, External Communications


Here's what you'll get to do:

  • Responsible for helping to maintain and develop content for all of SickKids' corporate social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube);
  • Perform daily monitoring and community management, including escalating issues to the broader team and other SickKids departments, and responding to direct messages;
  • Support the Senior Communications Advisor's development of the social media strategy, including staying on top of social media trends, exploring new channels and seeking new opportunities to expand and engage with our social media audiences;
  • Support intake of requests for SickKidsaffiliated social media accounts;
  • Responsible for reviewing videos to be posted on YouTube and other channels;
  • Track and report social media analytics proactively and upon request;
  • Collaborate with staff from many different clinical divisions and research programs as well as other key stakeholders to understand communications goals and develop social media content;
  • Interview and work with SickKids patients and families to create original content for SickKids channels and engage with usergenerated content as appropriate;
  • In addition to social media content, assist with the writing and editing of other communications materials, such as newsletters, employee intranet posts, web stories and more;
  • Provide media monitoring support through the development of a daily report for organizationwide distribution;
  • Monitor, post and generate timely content for the Ontario Poison Centre (OPC) social media accounts (Twitter and Instagram);
  • Support other OPC communications needs as required, such as developing awareness campaigns, tip sheets, web stories, escalating issues, media relations and working with partner organizations.

Here's what you'll need:


  • Degree/diploma in social or digital media, marketing, communications, public relations, or journalism;
  • One to two years of corporate social media and/or communications experience with an interest in a healthcare, research or notforprofit setting;
  • On the pulse of a large variety of social media channels including strong understanding of Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and TikTok;
  • Sound judgment, solid strategic thinking and troubleshooting skills, as well as the ability to carefully manage sensitive and confidential information;
  • Ability to balance competing deadlines with strong organizational and project management skills;
  • A natural storyteller with excellent writing skills and an eye for visuals;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Team player who excels at collaborating with others to achieve common goals.

Employment Type:
Full-Time (35 hours/week, 12-month contract)
