Position Summary


At The Learning Place we have a special team that strives to service the community and focuses on helping those most in need to upskill/reskill and learn basic literacy skills that position the most vulnerable to succeed in their educational journey.

We are hiring for an English and Math instructor in a Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program located in Brampton to upgrade literacy skills in preparation for employment, post-secondary, or high school equivalency testing (GED).

Program delivery is individualized within a group setting according to learners' needs and specific to their goals. This Employment Ontario program is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD)


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Tasks:

- plan and deliver instruction per week according to the OALCF guidelines
- deliver individualized programs focusing on learners' needs and goals
- understand OALCF Milestones delivery and monitoring of learners
- understand the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) delivery of learner goal paths
- develop learning materials and learning strategies to meet learners' needs
- conduct ongoing assessment, track learner progress, and maintain learners' records
- integrate computer skills into programming when possible and encourage learners to use our computer lab for assignments and milestones.
- be comfortable doing CaMS paperwork for each learner as they reach their milestones along with having the knowledge to implement cumulative tasks per goal path for each learner

  • Must be comfortable working with adults and familiar with common adult education methodologies.
  • Critical to be a self starter and a forward thinker to anticipate issues and be proactive to address them
  • Familiarity with Language and Basic Skills (LBS) in the region is a definite asset but not required.
  • Occasional delivery of Employability workshops (training and material will be provided) via virtual platform may be required.

Curriculum development

  • Be familiar with helping the team of instructors to create relevant, varied curriculum for learner's interests, abilities, and the structure of the program.
  • Find creative resources to draw upon for curriculum creation and incorporate them into the program.
  • Work with the internal marketing team to create social media posts and raise awareness for the LBS program.
  • Find creative ways to reach leaners both current and potential through marketing initiatives.

Strategic Planning:


  • Work closely with ED and Program Manager each quarter for strategic planning readiness.
  • Aid staff and ED in preparing.
PPT presentations as needed for existing community partners and establishing new community partner relationships as it relates to the LBS program

  • Support any strategic grant writing initiatives as needed.
Most often this may be doing tasks such as, but not limited to:


  • Refine proposal submission based on requirements
  • Document solutions as needed by the ED or grant writer

Skills and Qualifications:


  • 24 years working with adults would be a tremendous asset
  • 12 years of case management and support would be a highly soughtafter skill
  • Understanding disability and social equity issues would be an asset
  • Excellent reading, oral and written communication skills, as well as sound critical thinking and interpersonal skills
  • Must be committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and be able to demonstrate an understanding o these principles as they relate to students' success and goal path
  • Demonstrated understanding of the strengths and challenges of adults with multibarriers and understand how to teach with these in mind
  • Ability to exercise initiative, tact, discretion, problemsolving skills and to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Being comfortable with social media and knowing how to use the various platforms would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks for multiple stakeholders is critical to be successful in this role.
  • High degree of organization is critical to be successful in this role.
  • Proficient in MS Office and Google Workspace this is mandatory since this is our main office software package.
  • Must be comfortable working with files on the cloud or online data storage platform.
  • Must be a self starter and take a high degree of ownership for assigned tasks.
  • Must be flexible to jump in and do what is needed to support the organizational goals and to meet object
