NOTE:

This posting represents a part-time, seasonal position for the Fall and Winter semesters working Monday to Thursday from 1 pm to 9 pm for 28 hours per week, with a start date of September 11, 2023.

This position is based on the SGW campus.


SCOPE

Reporting to the Head, Information Services, and under the supervision of the Information Services Supervisor, the incumbent performs tasks of a complex nature associated with collection development, reference (in person and online), and library instruction, with functional guidance from the Librarians; performs other duties which may be assigned.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide assistance to users according to established procedures.
  • Assist with preparation of orientations and instruction programs, as assigned; assist with preparation of collection awareness displays in public areas, as assigned.
  • Encourage users to abide by the Library's Code of Conduct; report problems to Concordia Security as needed.
  • Perform bibliographic checking and searching of online library catalogues, specialized collections, electronic and print catalogues of publishers and vendors when requested by Librarians.
  • Assist Librarians in carrying out tasks related to special projects (e.g. preparation of bibliographies, comparison of collections, surveys and reports).
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Reference collection according to established procedures; assist library users on the use of equipment.
  • Clear, sort and shelve materials in the Reference collection.
  • Assist in keeping the Reference collection uptodate, including filing updates for updating looseleaf and other services.
  • Assist with the maintenance of equipment; report problems with computer workstations and printers.
  • Assist with secretarial duties; assist with maintenance of office photocopier and printers; assist with distribution of departmental mail.
  • Record relevant statistics.
  • Participate in evaluating established procedures and make suggestions for improvement to the Unit Head and to the Information Services Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (3year technical DEC) in Information and Library Technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential; this must include proven aptitude for and interest in serviceoriented work; demonstrated ability to handle queries and complaints with courtesy, tact, and good judgement.
  • Proven ability to interpret policies and to solve problems with flexibility and good judgment.
  • Ability to organize work, establish priorities, and to perform clerical duties with special attention to accuracy, details, and deadlines; the ability to work with a minimum of supervision is essential.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and other staff members is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Outlook and Windows and of managing files in a Windows environment is required.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French; fluency is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required; knowledge of PowerPoint is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Internet navigation skills is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to locate and interpret bibliographic records and documents on a variety of online platforms as required.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and technologies and adapt to changing technologies.
  • Physical stamina required to shelve Reference materials.
  • Work requires long periods of standing of at least 90 minutes. Moderate physical effort is required to push a book truck, and to handle books and computer equipment.
  • Have physical ability to lift/carry/move without assistance up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) and to push a book truck weighing up to 300lbs.
