About the position

Role and Responsibilities


In association with and under the supervision of the Senior Curator, Canadian Art, the Associate Curator of Modern Canadian art collaborates in the priorities of the department with respect to the development and care of the collection, permanent collection installations, ongoing research into the collection, the proposal of special exhibitions and the potential for collaboration on curatorial programming with internal and external stakeholders; recommends works of art for acquisition by establishing their authenticity, art historical and aesthetic significance; recommends treatments for conservation of art works; researches, writes and prepares exhibition catalogues, art publications and various didactic materials for installations of the collection and specific exhibitions; develops and maintains a national and international professional networks of peers and colleagues; actively contributes to outreach, partnerships, development and donor relations.

The Associate Curator of Modern Canadian art works collaboratively with all departments within and outside of curatorial, and actively engages with and supports the NGC's Indigenous Ways and Decolonization team.


Requirements:


  • Master's degree in art history with a specialized knowledge in Modern Canadian art for the period of 1945 to 2000
  • Minimum of 710 years' experience working in the field of Modern Canadian art with a strong understanding of the multiple facets, contexts, networks, and communities of the Canadian art scene at all levels from the local to provincial and the national
  • Minimum of 710years of experience in writing on Modern Canadian art, publications for exhibitions, catalogues, scholarly monographs, lectures and articles, corporate documents, educational and promotional material, and digital texts related to Modern art In Canada
  • Minimum years of experience in curatorial research in Modern Canadian art
  • Experience working art collectors of modern art in Canada;
  • Experience working with various arts institutions, public and commercial galleries, artistrun centres, as well as communitybased knowledge centres and archives;
  • Experience working with social networking sites and curating images preferably in a museum or gallery environment;
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the dynamic facets of artmaking of the period and the networks of production, circulation and reception that comprise the vast ecology of the art world on a local, provincial and national scale;
  • Advanced writing and editorial skills in both official languages;
  • Ability to coordinate, control and organize multiple functions and activities;
  • Advanced knowledge of current exhibition methodologies, installations and practices, and critical discourses pertaining to modern art and curatorial paradigms;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • A high degree of initiative, good judgement and the ability to work well under pressure;
  • Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member;
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, collection databases such as Mimsy, etc.).
