Job Summary
Animal Care Technicians are responsible for animal care, building maintenance, and customer relations.
Qualifications, Experience, and Personal Attributes
- Minimum High School diploma or equivalent;
- Animal care training and experience is required;
- Knowledge of a variety of animals, animal behavior, and their care requirements;
- Must have genuine compassion for animals;
- Good command of the English language verbal and written;
- Good communication and customer service skills;
- Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties;
- Must be a team player;
- Computer literacy is an asset;
- Must maintain an Animal Welfare position;
- Willingness to perform euthanasia subsequent to training when required
- Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals;
- Ability to remain professional under pressure;
- Proactive, selfdirected, and able to work in a fastpaced environment;
- Able to multitask, prioritize workload, and flexible to adapt to change and shifting priorities;
- Crisis management skills;
- Knowledge of WHMIS.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Feeding of all animals housed within the humane society;
- General cleaning and disinfecting of the premises and equipment used within the shelter, i.e. food bowls, cat litter pans, utensils, carrying cages;
- Laundry duties as required;
- General bathing and grooming of animals as required;
- Vaccinates and deworms shelter animals as required;
- Notifies supervisor of any health problems or concerns regarding the animals;
- Assists the public with adoptions and inquiries;
- Follows policies and procedures set out by the Society and reports all incidents to his/her immediate supervisor immediately;
- Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations;
- Immediately reports all incidents of injury, property damage, absence of or failure of a protective device and/or equipment to the supervisor immediately;
- Reception duties, including greeting the public, answering phones, filing, and general clerical duties;
- Exterior maintenance if required i.e. cleaning of outside dog runs, lawn maintenance, snow removal;
- Other duties as required.
Working Conditions
- Requires the ability to pick up all sizes and types of animals
- Exposure to distressed and/or aggressive animals
- Dealing with the public under a variety of circumstances
- Working in a noisy environment
- Handling various chemicals and medications
- May have to handle wildlife (potential for zoonotic diseases)
- Working in an emotionally charged environment
Job Types:
