    The Embryologist has a practical and theoretical understanding of human reproductive biology, embryology, infertility and assisted reproductive technology (ART). The overall role of the Embryologist is to apply their array of skills along with other members of a multidisciplinary team to aid patients in achieving a pregnancy. Duties involve highly complex activities performed within the ART laboratory according to protocols described in the MSF Andrology/Embryology Laboratory Procedure Manual (Relevant Folders in the Paradigm Document Database). In addition to participation in andrology tasks, the Embryologist will also be responsible for the culture, fertilization, manipulation, morphological evaluation and cryopreservation of patient's gametes and embryos. Development of SOP's, documentation and reporting are also part of the Embryologist's responsibilities..

    JOB FUNCTIONS:


    • Applies the principles and practices of laboratory aseptic techniques and shares responsibility with the other embryologists to ensure that all techniques meet the prescribed quality control and quality assurance standards and procedures as described in the standard operating procedures (SOPs);

    • Performs pretreatment evaluation (semen analysis W.H.O standards);

    • Processes semen samples for IUI, IVF and freezing;

    • Prepares, processes and isolates sperm for ICSI from surgical testicular samples (PESA, TESA, mTESE);

    • Participates in oocyte retrieval procedures and assessment of human oocytes;

    • Inseminates oocytes using conventional IVF;

    • Assesses fertilization and embryo development at all stages using standardized morphological criteria;

    • Prepares and performs embryo transfer with or without assisted hatching;

    • Performs cryopreservation of embryos/blastocysts;

    • Performs thaws of frozen embryos and assessment of embryo survival for transfer;

    • Maintains clear documentation of all technical procedures and cryobank records

    • Maintains the laboratory QC, including all equipment and areas, inventory control and ordering of laboratory supplies, preparation of results for entry into a computer database and preparation of laboratory reports;

    • Provides rotating support for -hour alarm back up as part of the overall laboratory team;

    • Liaisons with patients, physicians, nursing, and administrative staff;

    • Works proficiently with computers, MS office, databases, eIVF and other software required by the laboratory;

    • Participates with the MSF Laboratory in preparing for and completing formal Quality Management Surveys/Inspections (including Accreditation Canada and College of American Pathologists);

    • Participates in relevant research projects and presentations such as case reviews;

    • Reports non-conformities and deviations from SOP's;

    Job Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree (Master's preferred) in a related field (e.g. biological science, reproductive biology, animal science) from an accredited education institution.
  • CFAS Certification preferred and will be required within 2 years of hiring as MSF Embryologist;
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for routine interaction with clinical and administrative team members as well as with MSF patients;
  • A minimum of 2 years relevant and related training/work experience is required before full work independence is possible. Micromanipulation procedures (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection and Embryo Biopsy) will likely require significantly longer for full independence.
