The Opportunity

Course Descriptions
HSCI 30- Refraction Skills 2
This course increases the theoretical knowledge necessary for performing automated and manual refraction. Focus is placed on methods of measuring, assessing, and detecting abnormalities in visual acuity, visual field, and binocular vision. Operating the instruments used in such testing is also covered.
HSCI 37- Applied Refracting Skills 2

Building on the first lab course in refraction, this course incorporates all components of clinical theory that have been previously learned in the program.

Students refine their learning through performing visual acuity testing, manual and objective assessment of refractive errors on a patient, and providing prescription for the purpose of vision correction.

The Role
Prepare and deliver lectures and lab courses to students enrolled in the Optician program
Maintain and update curriculum and course outlines as required
Prepare lists of lab supplies required for the Educational Technologist
Evaluate student progress through assignments, exams and lab competencies
Facilitate student achievement and professionalism through mentorship and coaching
Provide feedback for continuous program improvement
Be an active and engaged member of the School to maintain a "team environment"
Participate in all SAIT training, School and program meetings.
Promote and support SAIT and the School of Health and Public Safety's mission, strategic and academic plans.
Remain current and maintain contact with industry sectors to assure technology is relevant
All other duties as required for the position


Qualifications:


Must be:


  • A Licensed Optician (LO) in the province of Alberta with extensive refraction experience; OR
  • An optometrist by trade (license to practice is an asset)
  • Proficient with technology to facilitate delivery of classroom and lab content through the Learning Management System (Brightspace)


Minimum of five years of progressive and diverse hands-on clinical experience in the optical/optometric/ophthalmic industry, particularly in refracting and prescribing.

Previous academic background (including teaching experience) is an asset as are additional educational qualifications
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to thrive in a team environment are required
Involvement is scholarly activity/research is an asset.
Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
A high degree of flexibility and adaptability to unexpected and changing conditions
Ability to function effectively in a team environment
Comfortable speaking to the public
Positive & respectful attitude
