    Position Summary

    Under the supervision of the Capital Works Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining contracted assets (Bridges, culverts, roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, vegetation, etc.) per standards and conditions specified in the contract.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain highways, roads, and bridges to ensure they are safe and in good condition for drivers, using heavy equipment and other hand or power tools.
  • Traffic control setup and removal in accordance with OTM Book 7
  • Operate heavy equipment including but not limited to traffic control equipment, vac truck, boom truck, bucket truck, dump truck, excavator, loader.
  • Work with concrete, asphalt, and steel. Including welding, cutting, and forming.
  • Keeping accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • Be available for emergency rail repairs, end treatment repairs, fencing, and any other emergency work. Be available for emergency response rotations as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be comfortable working from heights in bucket trucks, scaffolding, and aerial platforms lifts.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Capital Works Foreman.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Skill in the operation of company/rental tools and equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate
  • Ability to perform basic math skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Highly developed sense of safety awareness and perceptive ability.
  • Ability to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks and make adjustments to avoid loss, injury or accident.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers/subcontractors, understand and follow verbal and written safety instructions. Ability to think clearly and focus on your safety in your immediate surroundings, while using tools and equipment, while driving or operating equipment.
  • You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to your job.
  • Education and Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in bridge/road construction and maintenance (outdoor work -Preferred).
  • Minimum valid G driver's license required and a good driving record to drive company vehicle. DZ is preferred.
  • Ability to attain a valid Ontario Class DZ license is an asset.
  • Successful completion of training in traffic control methods, first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, WHMIS and job-related aspects of Occupational Health.

  • The employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk on a wide range of surfaces; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric powered tools, equipment and to work in confined spaces.
  • Work Environment

  • The incumbent will spend time completing field work.
  • Field Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fume or airborne particles. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and sometimes high.
