Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

  • At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.
  • Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, everchanging industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role
Radio-Canada Northern Ontario is looking for a videojournalist with keen editorial judgment and excellent visual storytelling skills. If you are the right person for this role, you are independent, resourceful and driven by curiosity.
You are comfortable talking to anyone and committed to seeking out a range of perspectives in your coverage. You make cold calls and maintain relationships with a long list of contacts. You bring newsy and original ideas to the table and you know how to use investigative tools.

Under the general direction of an Executive Producer or delegate, you will operate independently or in a team to research, gather, package and present material for all platforms.

Work is governed by CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies and standards. Advice and supervision are available, of course, but initiative and independent judgment are essential.

Although you are part of the Sudbury news team, you must also work closely with the radio current affairs programs to ensure that the best of your work is shared widely with the audience.

Please note that the position is full-time for a period of 10 months.

Key responsibilities:

  • Write for a variety of platforms including digital, social media, radio and television. Edit material for use on all platforms.
  • Gather highquality video, photographs and audio on scene in a variety of situations.
  • Monitor developing news through a variety of sources.
  • Arrange and conduct interviews in both English and French, and gather clips in French.
  • Decide which elements should be included in a story, their order, length and sequence, as well as the method of transition from one element to another.
  • Prepare, align, set up and operate various pieces of camera equipment, ensuring optimal video, audio and technical quality under prevailing conditions.
  • Edit recorded items on appropriate/available editing systems.
  • Report the story, either on camera or in voiceover form.
  • Graduation from university or community college in a relevant course of study.
  • Three or more years' experience in broadcast journalism.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues facing people in northern Ontario.
  • Proven skills in shooting and editing video to tell compelling stories.
  • Demonstrated range of visual storytelling techniques that extends beyond the traditional television pak.
  • Ease with onair work.
  • Strong knowledge of social media and digital platforms in general.
  • Critical acumen.
  • Proven ability to generate original story ideas and knowledgeable contacts.
  • Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Proven conversational writing style.
  • Ability to respond to breaking news situations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Ability to work flexible hours in a highpressure, tightdeadline environment, often in unexpected overtime situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (we like to laugh and we hope you do too).
  • Excellent command of French and good knowledge of English.
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Valid passport and ability to travel as needed.
