Role Summary

Reporting to the Provincial Operations Director, the Manager, Communications & Community Relations provides strategic direction and operational leadership for communications, partner engagement, organizational and community development.


The Manager, Communications & Community Relations identifies and supports key strategic initiatives; counsels the Provincial Executive Director and Provincial Operations Director in the development of strategies, messaging and reporting for various activities and requirements; represents BC Transplant at the provincial and national level on special projects as required.

Serves as the program liaison with the PHSA Corporate Communications Department, ensuring alignment with PHSA's strategic direction.


The manager works with the Executive Director, Provincial Operations Director and PHSA communications on issues management, media responses and other time sensitive communication issues.


As part of the BC Transplant leadership team, the Manager plays an integral role in the development of the Agency's strategic plan, and is responsible for developing the annual operating plan for the BCT communications and community relations department.

This position is critical to raising awareness and understanding of the role and mandate of BC Transplant.


The manager Works with the Provincial Operations Director and other leadership to develop communications and engagement plans for transplant programs and regional transplant clinics.


The manager works with the Family Services Manager and the Manager of ODHD on communication issues and strategies for organ donor families and transplant recipients.


What you'll do

  • Plays a key role, working with the Provincial Executive Director and Provincial Operations Director, in the development and implementation of the agency's strategic direction and operational action plan.
  • Responsible for development of policies, procedures and guidelines for areas such as government relations, social media, communications, BCT website, marketing and branding.
  • Develops strategic communications and engagement plans to contribute to the achievement of BCT operational goals. Includes responsibility for identifying and capitalizing on opportunities to ensure positive promotion of BC Transplant's accomplishments and the consistent and accurate portrayal of the position of the program related to sensitive issues. Responsible for the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, including marketing and communications, to increase the number of registered organ donors in BC, and to increase public awareness of the value of organ and tissue donation.
  • Responsible for establishing, maintaining and leveraging corporate sponsors and community partners to maximize opportunities for social marketing and messaging initiatives in support of organ donor awareness and registration. Develop relationships with new partners where appropriate to reach target groups and to expand upon BC Transplant's messaging capability.
  • Provides support, leadership, and communications counsel to the POD and PED on strategies which impact BC Transplant at a national level.
  • Provide leadership and strategy development in the creation of collaborative partnerships with public notforprofit foundations and associations working together on the shared interest in increasing the number of organs available for transplant and in the prevention of diseases that lead to endstage organ failure.
  • Develop strategies and provide leadership to programs which continually build the engagement levels of partners and the community, including programs that provide opportunities for engagement and support of volunteers, donor families and recipients.
  • Leads the communications team, supervises and evaluates the performance of team members.
  • Defining, in collaboration with PHSA Corporate Communications, the working relationship between this portfolio and PHSA Corporate Communications; and acting as the agency liaison for issues management and strategic communications messaging;

What you bring

Qualifications

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree in communications or a related discipline and seven to ten years of related experience in a corporate communications role.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a team environment with multiple partners, inspiring confidence and building trust and consensus.
  • Strong understanding of how to build and maintain functional internal and external partnerships, organizational development practices and ability to establish good working relationships.
