In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $62,475 - $104,123.


Location - North campus. The role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

Position summary


The University of Alberta is currently seeking a strong, organized communicator to assume the position of Program and Operations Manager.

Reporting directly to the Director, and working collegially within a small and dynamic office, the Program and Operations Manager provides support for UAlberta North.


UAlberta North is a high-profile collaborative unit reporting jointly to the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and the Vice-President (Research).

Its purpose, working closely with senior leadership, is to provide support, effective coordination, institutional priority, and visibility to the University's significant work across the Canadian and Circumpolar North, In light of the University's commitments to serve the public good and to act on the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which called for a changed relationship between post-secondary institutions and Indigenous peoples, UAlberta North's mandate includes the following responsibilities:


  • Enhance, develop and maintain the University's relationships with northern governments (territorial, Indigenous, municipal, provincial), public agencies, postsecondary institutions, communities, and relevant international associations;
- build an interdisciplinary and cross-faculty community of northern researchers, professors and students;
- facilitate innovative and reciprocal forms of "north-south" knowledge exchange;
- amplify northern voices, particularly those of Indigenous knowledge-holders, on our campuses;
- support students through awards and other opportunities, including the Engage North Program.


Further Role Specific
Responsibilities Include:


  • Builds and maintains an accessible network with UA researchers, projects, and research sites in the North;
  • Takes a leadership role in working with communications professionals and ensuring that operational elements of a communications strategy are consistently implemented and updated as appropriate in all print and digital materials;
  • Identifies, researches, and presents stories in print/video/digital formats, as feasible, that feature the UA's work in the North, and at the same time shape a more nuanced understanding about northern peoples and places within the University community and the broader public;
  • Advises researchers, including graduate students, through workshops, online materials, and/or informal consultations, as to how to engage northern communities at all stages of research;
  • Works with Indigenous Initiatives and other relevant UA offices to advise researchers on relevant cultural protocols with respect to indigenous communities;
  • Contributes to building a shared base of expertise in community engagement at the University;
- prepares the operating budget and provides financial management of operational and other accounts, including endowments;

  • Manages the U of A's Northern Grants and Scholarships Program, including the Northern Scientific Training Program and the U of A Northern Awards, in addition to endowmentfunded faculty seed grants and student scholarships;
  • Provides support to the Engage North Program, and serves as first emergency contact for student interns.

To be successful in this position, the incumbent will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Graduate Degree Required;
  • 7+ years of professional marketing and/or communications experience;
