Position

Environmental Technician Intern

Duration: 4 months (May 2023 to August 2023), potential to extend duration of the internship

Reports to:
Project Manager(s) and/or Senior Technical Staff

Paragon is currently seeking an Environmental Technician Intern that is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science or Diploma in Environmental Science or a related field to join our team for a four (4) month summer internship in 2023. Various scopes of work are available, and Paragon will do our best to tailor the role to meet your educational and professional objectives._

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assisting with various tasks, including but not limited to field preparation, safety documentation, field work, and data management
  • Contributing to field programs as a crew assistant, while focusing on learning and building the skills necessary to take on a more complex role postgraduation
  • Working cooperatively with technical, health and safety, GIS, and administrative colleagues to successfully deliver our products
  • Assisting Project Managers and administrative staff with various tasks as they arise
  • Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to: data management including data collection, entry, and review; contributing to field reports; preparing and submitting ground disturbance requests; hazard assessments; and sample processing and delivery
  • Providing input on how best to use technology to improve field processes
  • Attending workshops, meetings, and other similar events
  • Exercising good judgment in situations that are not covered by policies and procedures
  • Preparing regular, timely and accurate timesheets, expense reports and other relevant documentation
  • Assisting with equipment and office/warehouse maintenance and safety processes

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


You must have the following attributes:

  • Working towards a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Science or Diploma in Environmental Science or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institute
  • An absolute, and genuine dedication to safe work
  • Ability to be productive while working independently as well as in a team setting
  • Physical capacity for strenuous fieldwork, including augering deep inspection sites and walking several kilometres through rough terrain
  • Resultsoriented and efficient, with excellent problemsolving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an affinity for working respectfully with colleagues and clients at all levels
  • Proficient with computers and software, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (at least an intermediate level of proficiency)
  • Comfortable using advanced GPS units or tablets
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License, with clean drivers abstract, able to travel throughout the provinces and work weekends when necessary

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Have completed introductory or advanced course work related to soil, vegetation, wetlands, ecology, and/or reclamation prior to starting
  • Safety Certificates including First Aid, Advanced driver training, GDII, H2S, OSSA, CSTS, PCST, WHMIS, Bear Aware, ATV/UTV
  • ATV/UTV/Argo experience
  • Plant identification skills
