Carpenter (Civil Maintainer)

Location:
Pinawa, Manitoba


Schedule:
Four hour Shifts - Monday to Thursday


Job Summary


The Carpenter (Civil Maintainer) is responsible to perform a range of carpentry work associated with buidling, maintenance and construction in an internal and external shop to fulfill customer requirements in a timely and accurate manner.

The incumbent must adhere to industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety. Decisions on tasks performed by trades will be based on the Red Seal Occupational Analysis.

CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures).

Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.


Education

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed apprenticeship training or equivalent and be qualified as a Carpenter with an Interprovincial Red Seal ticket.

Abilities and Skills

The incumbent should have:


  • Must have expertise in a wide variety of skills that are needed in commercial construction as well as in residential building and structural maintenance;
  • On residential sites, carpenters crib basements, build house frameworks, walls, roofs and exterior finishes, and install doors, windows, flooring, cabinets, stairs, handrails, paneling, molding and ceiling tiles;
  • At construction locations they are responsible for building concrete forms, scaffolding, bridges, trestles, tunnels, shelters, towers and other structures;
  • Those who work in maintenance may repair and remodel existing structures of all kinds.

Certified Carpenter is trained to:


  • Prepare the foundations of buildings;
  • Install beams, girders and footing forms;
  • Build stairs and stair forms;
  • Construct sloped and unequal pitch roofs;
  • Install trim, doors, baseboards, moldings, cabinets and other finish carpentry;
  • Lay floors of resilient tile or hardwood strips;
  • Erect and insulate walls, ceilings and floors; and
  • Fireproof beams and columns;
  • Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in the following areas of study:
  • Mathematics, Science and Communications related to the trade;
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a variety of tools;
  • Roof Framing (equal and unequal pitch);
  • Concrete Forming and Foundations;
  • General Framing and Heavy Timber Construction;
  • Stair Building, Cabinet Layout and Construction;
  • Carpentry in Masonry Construction;
  • Estimating, Blueprint Reading and Drafting;
  • Ability to improvise, analyze, trouble shoot and implement conceptual drawings;
  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
  • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
  • Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one's work;
  • Conscientious about accuracy;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and responds with initiative;
  • Ability to work in a multitrade group and communicate with CNL staff across a broad range of disciplines in order to ensure proper coordination and prioritization of work;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders; and
  • Highly motivated and able to work with mínimal supervision;
  • Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.

  • Perform skilled work associated with the repair and finishing of building maintenance and construction;
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices of all work areas, tools and equipment;
  • Good comprehension skills to interpret drawings and code specifications;
  • Willingness to keep up with new developments in the trade;
  • Keep uptodate with new developments in technology;
  • Work from drawings and sketches as required, able to provide material takeoffs and labour estimates;
  • Read, interpret engineering drawings and weld to the engineering specifications as outlined;
  • Good planning and organizational abilities;
  • Effective communication skills, especially when working with customers;
  • Teamwork skills when working on large projects with coworkers;
  • Work proficiently in a variety of assigned tasks;
  • Highly motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision;
