Your opportunity:

The Financial Assistant is an integral member of the department of Economics administrative team.

The functional nature of the responsibilities within the economics admin team will provide the Financial Assistant with exposure to many aspects of financial services and require the Financial Assistant to support other team members as needed to achieve the goals of the Department.

Under supervision of the Department Manager the incumbent assists faculty members, staff and TAs with Financial transactions and responding to general inquiries of the team.

The position provides financial administrative support to faculty and staff membersrelated to teaching and research.


Responsibilities include:

drafting employment contracts; payment and payroll transactions utilizing FIS, HRIS and RIS, preparing monthly reports; resolving discrepancies; expense reports, invoices, purchase orders; and payroll reconciliation.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Recording detailed transactions for many accounts and preparing and/or processing journal entries
  • Checking that proper approvals are obtained prior to processing transactions
  • Obtaining required authorizations and signatures to process financial documents and expense reimbursements
  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Identifying and resolving individual financial discrepancies
  • Preparing draft employment letters using templates
  • Coordinating the training and recruitment process for teaching assistants

Essential Qualifications:


  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) in accounting or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum two (2) years' related experience including accounting and recording transactions in a financial system
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principals and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience with analyzing data discrepancies
  • Experience updating databases and generating reports
  • Experience compiling, sorting and organizing financial data
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office Word and Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, discretion and problem solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills in order to meet competing deadlines
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail

  • Experience in an educational, public sector setting
