Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MLF) supports projects to reverse the deterioration of the Earth's stratospheric ozone layer and reducing consumption of high global warming hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). It was established in 1991 as the financial mechanism of the Montreal Protocol to assist developing countries (Article 5 countries in the language of the Protocol) in complying with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol. The Multilateral Fund is managed by an Executive Committee (ExCom) with an equal representation of seven industrialized and seven Article 5 countries that are elected annually by the Meeting of the Parties. The Committee reports every year to the Meeting of the Parties on its operations, and it is assisted by the Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada and administered by UNEP ). This internship is located in UNEP/MLF at the Montreal duty station. Interns work five days per week hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The Multilateral Fund Secretariat is offering an internship with a start date of 16 March 2026, for a minimum duration of 3 months and a maximum duration of up to 6 months. Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief Officer, the intern will provide assistance to the Multilateral Fund Secretariat with the following duties and responsibilities: - Research, compile, analyse, summarize and present relevant data and information for the preparation of documents to be submitted to the meetings of the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund and the Interagency Coordination meetings; - Collect, compile and analyse data and information related to the activities of the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment, including those supported by the Multilateral Fund; - Prepare lists, tables and charts for use in the review of project submissions and preparation of project documents for consideration by the Executive Committee; - Assist with the extraction, analysis and preparation of datasets for migration of relevant data and information from existing databases to the new Secretariat's Knowledge Management System (KMS); - Assist the KMS team, in consultation with relevant staff members, with the testing of the various solutions and features of the KMS, and with entering data and information in the various portals and dashboards, as required; - Assist with the coordination of relevant activities and the content creation and update of the Multilateral Fund website, and with the preparation of content and material for the meeting portal and the Multilateral Fund's decisions handbook (QuiriO3); - Assist, in consultation with relevant staff members, with the development of country profiles for all Article 5 countries, and input the KMS, as required; - Provide support in the organisation and holding of meetings of the Executive Committee and any other events of the Multilateral Fund Secretariat; and - Assist with any other tasks, as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above). d. Preferred area of study: International relations, environmental science, sustainable development, communications, administration or related fields. The applicant should have: a. Analytical skills, good communication skills both written and oral; b. Proficiency in computer skills, population of websites, use of databases, web-based platforms and relevant software; c. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; d. The ability to interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Applicants should have proficiency in computer skills (good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Excel), use of databases, population of websites, web-based platforms and relevant software. Ability to draft website content, stories and articles is desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
