Role Responsibilities:

Sheriff Highway Patrol (SHP) is based out of vehicle inspection stations and GoA offices throughout the province.

As an SHP sheriff, you will be responsible for patrolling provincial highways to conduct targeted traffic enforcement to reduce the number of serious injury and fatal collisions in the province and protect roadways and other transportation infrastructure.

You will also conduct Criminal Code investigations and respond to collisions and other calls for service on rural highways.

Specific duties include:

Enforcing traffic safety laws and provincial statutes applicable to motor vehicles;
Conducting Check stops, impaired driving investigations, and other Criminal Code enforcement;
Conducting commercial vehicle inspections;
Responding to and investigating motor vehicle collisions and other calls for service;
Arresting wanted persons on outstanding warrants;
Patrolling designated highways and other provincial infrastructure;
Attending court and providing evidence as required;

As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem-solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals in volatile situations.

A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.

Qualifications:

A two-year diploma in a related field plus two (2) years progressively responsible related experience. A post-secondary diploma, degree, or journeyman certification in any field may be considered.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

The following will be considered as assets:

Previous certification to conduct Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections
Experience conducting Criminal Code investigations

Psych evaluation
