School-Based Youth and Family Counselling

Reports to:
Executive Director


Role:
This position provides clinical supervision and support to a team of 20-25 school-based Youth and Family Counsellors (YFCs). YFCs are based in elementary, middle, and high schools in School District 61.

YFCs provide individual and group counselling, crisis intervention, resource and referral, family counselling, and life skills development to reach the following service objectives:

- support children/youth to succeed in school and or educational/employment programs
- enhance children/youth family and community relationships
- promote children/youth and their families' healthy lifestyle choices
- promote development of students' healthy social relationships


The Clinical Consultant provides in-person and remote case consultation with YFCs, will ensure that services are delivered in a professionally and ethically responsible manner, and will promote ongoing learning and development of the YFC cohort.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provide guidance and consultation to YFCs in all areas of practice
  • Provide case consultation to ensure clients' needs are met within the parameters of the service objectives
  • Provide support for YFCs in crisis management
  • Identify areas of need for professional development or group learning
  • Ensure ethical and professional standards are being practiced by all YFCs
  • Provide coaching, professional competence building, and goalsetting support to YFCs
  • Provide interpretation of behavior/learning/development/mental health information
  • Make recommendations for interventions, practice methods, referral, programming, and safety planning
  • Assisting YFCs to reflect on boundaries, selfcare, wellness, and burnout prevention.
  • Advancing advocacy for the needs of the students and families in the school system
  • Build capacity among YFCs to improve their ability to meet service outcomes
  • Provide guidance to YFCs on records management and reporting
  • Attend YFC meetings as assigned by Executive Director
  • Make training and professional development recommendations and coordinating agreed upon training
  • Report on issues and trends to Executive Directors of Quadra Village Community Centre and Fairfield Gonzales Community Association
  • To be familiar with and implement QVCC's policies, procedures, and practices, assisting with other related duties when required and approved by the Executive Director

  • Superior understanding of Child, Family and Community Services Act, Mental Health Act, BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and other relevant acts and statutes
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills
  • Builds effective relationships with Youth and Family Counselling staff
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Selfdirected and proactive
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Strong time management and administrative skills

Education and Experience:


  • Minimum Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Counselling)
  • Minimum three years experience with schoolbased consultation and/or individual/group therapy/counselling is required
  • Two years experience providing clinical supervision preferred. One year minimum.
  • Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of the field
  • Knowledge of issues, trends and legislative requirements related to program responsibilities
  • Experience working in a school setting
  • Experience working within schools and with MCFD and Mental Health and Addictions Services
  • Must be able to provide an acceptable vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check
  • Hold a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Social Worker, or equivalent designation.

Terms of Employment:


  • Hours of work: Up to
    10 hours per week. Hours are flexible but are often dictated by the needs and schedules of YFCs.
  • Compensation
    :$36.72 an hour
  • Vacation: Paid Winter and Spring School Breaks. July and August off without pay
  • Contract Period: September 1 through June 30 each school year. Renewal based on funding levels from School District 6
  • Office space will be provided as needed
  • The employer will provide access to a computer, photocopier, printer, and fax machine
  • The employer will provide a $25 monthly stipend towards a cell phone plan
  • The Clinical Supervisor must have their own transportation and will be reimbursed for kilometres travelled, at QVCC's rate
