Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Deans of the Faculty of Law, Common Law and Civil Law Sections provides leadership for Indigenous affairs and building community at the Faculty level.
Proposes strategic directions and implements concrete initiatives to support the development of programs and services for Indigenous students, faculty and support staff for the Faculty.
Facilitates cooperation among various stakeholders as well as the commitment and participation of Indigenous communities in the university life.
Interprets both federal government mandate and aligns to uOttawa Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action while strategically developing an implementation strategy specifically for professional legal education while being in compliant to provincial legal guidelines.
Leads the advisory, counselling and cultural support for all Indigenous law students respecting privacy, sensitivity, inclusivity and accommodation, human rights, challenges.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, helps develop and implement the Truth and Reconciliation initiative of the faculty's strategic plan to ensure that the Faculty's progress in this file is in line with the University's Indigenous Action Plan, Transformation 2030 as well as the President's Advisory Committee for an Anti-Racist and Inclusive Campus.
Focuses efforts on Indigenous student recruitment and retention, including identifying and resolving gaps in services such as admissions and academic excellence to help set objectives related to Indigenous learners access to law school.
Develops, manages and supervises the delivery of ongoing professional development for staff and Faculty as it relates to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and the Pathways Report of the Indigenous Legal Traditions Committee.
Responsible for community relations relating to Indigenous relations portfolio with external partners including the Law Society of Ontario, the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the County of Carleton Law Association, l'Association des juristes francophones et francophiles de l'Ontario (AJEFO).
What you will bring:
- University degree in law, communications or a related field, with practical Indigenous knowledge, including Indigenous legal traditions with a minimum of five years of equivalent experience;
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, history and education; Community attachment an asset;
- Experience in legal research and legal writing skills;
- Experience in supervision
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of organizationwide policies and strategies;
