SSHRC

-funded Partnership Development Grant;

_What constitutes effective knowledge-exchange at the environmental science-policy interface?_ and summarized below.

The research aims to understand effective science communication at Canada's science-policy interface by determining how scientific evidence is disseminated and what intermediaries do to re-package existing knowledge for decision-makers.

The study asks, (1) which communication products are preferred by those making decisions about environmental management, and (2) how a program placing PhD-holders into government departments supports PhD-holders as science-policy boundary spanners in their career and (3) in their public visibility and perceptions of impact on bridging the science policy gap.

To answer these questions, the researcher will first conduct a communications experiment to uncover which products best support knowledge uptake among decision-makers.

To understand the role of boundary spanners, they will conduct an evaluation of the Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship, which is a unique training and employment program in Canada that is intended to address the need for governments to employ boundary spanners supporting the uptake of scientific evidence into policy.

The researcher will first survey fellowship alumni on their experience in the program and their insights on enabling conditions for successful boundary spanning.

They will secondly, use bibliometrics and data mining, to understand the public visibility of program alumni and their engagement compared to peers in government positions of the same classification who do not hold PhDs.

The research results are expected to provide concrete insight for researchers on how to best communicate and engage with decision-makers on vital scientific information required to bridge the science-policy gap in Canada.
