First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Division
The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Division is dedicated to supporting systemic change across the education system to close the achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and non-Indigenous students, and to ensure that all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of Indigenous peoples, including their cultures, language and histories; the importance of treaties; and the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.
The work of the branch involves engagement across all levels and sectors of the Provincial and First Nations education systems to impact all Alberta students and teachers, as well as focusing specifically on supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit student success.
Role:
Community Engagement Specialist
Reporting to the Manager, Cross-Ministry and Intergovernmental Relations, the Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for being the liaison between the department and Indigenous communities in Alberta.
The incumbent is responsible for arranging community visits by senior leadership, preparation of briefing materials including community profiles and contact lists and coordinating external stakeholder committees and panels.
As Community Engagement Specialist, you will be accountable for the following activities of the ministry:1. Developing and maintaining strong and productive relationships with FNMI stakeholders, strategic alliances with Ministry divisions, partnering ministries, education stakeholders, and federal partners to foster common understanding, respect and open dialogue
This includes:
- Facilitating strategic communication and relationship building to open ongoing communication and understanding.
- Championing the inclusion of FNMI communities and organizations in the development of related policies, legislation and frameworks.
- Identifying opportunities for improving relations with key partners and opportunities for improving programs, services, strategies, and agreements or initiatives
- Serving as a liaison with communities on data sharing. This will include working with other divisions on requesting and sharing data for community use
- Maintaining contact lists for ministry use (Education Directors, Chiefs, Presidents)
2. Support senior leadership in planning and scheduling Minister, Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister visits to community
This involves:
- Identifying communities to visit to further the department's connections
- Serving as the main point of contact for Minister and department visits to community
- Arranging community visits including transportation (vehicle rental or flights as appropriate), accommodation, liaising with community reps to create agendas and topics for the meetings
- Preparing agendas, annotated agendas, and other meeting materials as required
- Obtaining proper gifting for community visits (i.e. protocol for Elders and gifting); updating gifting list
- Coordinating events and meetings obtaining venue and catering, managing budget,, overseeing event from start to finish, completing postevent evaluation including communication summaries
- Developing and maintaining community profiles for use in briefing senior leadership and for informing department activities

3. Supporting the Minister's relationships with key partners and supporting fulfillment of the Minister's responsibilities pursuant to provincial legislation, programs and services
This involves:
- Notifying the Manager and Director of any information from FNMI communities or organizations that could significantly affect the Minister's relations with these communities or organizations.
- Identifying key individuals within FNMI communities or organizations who have significant influence within their communities or organizations.
- Completing Action Requests (ARs) as required, including the drafting of correspondence on behalf of senior leadership and completing briefing notes.
