POSITION FUNCTION
Perform tasks to construct forms, level fresh concrete, apply various types of surface treatments, place and repair bricks, masonry, blocks, stone, marble, tile and precast artificial units.
KEY DUTIES
Participate as a brick layer involved in the construction and repair of brick sidewalks and
structures; perform related caulking, grouting, cutting, jointing and the necessary mixing
procedures; construct required foundation work such as footing; perform cleaning functions and
related work as required.
Construct and repair concrete surfaces, resurface and replace damaged sections of floors, walls, roads, and other concrete structures; apply and spread mortar, cement and other adhesives using hand trowels to affix various types of surface materials to a base.
Operate various hand and power equipment such as shovels, jackhammers, and concrete saws to prepare sites for concrete work such as sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveways etc.; read and interpret engineering plans and grade sheets to determine the location of underground services and utilities; act as pad-man to direct the operation of various construction and excavation equipment; operate Bobcat type loaders as required.
Construct wooden forms to grades and alignments established from grade sheets and control points; set metal pins and arms to control the alignment of the curb extruder.
Place concrete by shovelling and levelling; finish with trowel, broom, and edger; apply various retardants and curing compounds; finish exposed aggregate concrete by applying chemicals, broom and washing surfaces, and other techniques such as stamping.
Install and finish various castings, boxes, interlocking paving bricks and sleeves; apply surface cleaning and finishing treatments such as acid washes and sealers; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned basis and reviewed by site supervisor.
Issues involving deviations from trade procedures and major expenditures are referred to supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Build forms, place, and finish concrete, repair rock and brick/paver structures. (frequent)
Operate jackhammers, cut-off saws, plate tampers and compactors. (occasional)

Work Environment:
Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)
Exposure to equipment noise. (often)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and apply the techniques of brick layer & masonry construction and concrete related finishes.
Operate various power equipment and hand tools.
Understand and discuss job related matters.
Read and interpret engineering drawings and grade sheets.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation
Current and valid B. C. Certificate of Trades Qualification as a Brick Layer/Mason (3 years).
Current and valid class 5 B.C. Driver's licence.
Experience:
3 years of related experience.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm, 40 hour work week
$37.65 per hour, Pay Grade 9 (Under Review)
