    This is a senior‑level role that requires the incumbent to have a strong understanding of technical, project management and leadership expertise within an environmental consulting environment. The incumbent is also responsible for the supervision and mentorship of key individuals within the biophysical team, as well as developing and maintaining expertise in their technical discipline.

    The role of senior ecologist includes working as a fully accountable project manager whose responsibilities include staff supervision, service delivery to internal and external clients, financial, quality and project management within a team environment. The incumbent will actively participate as a technical resource, manager of a project, or managing a scope of work within a larger project as part of a multidisciplinary team. This will include wetland assessment and classification, pipelines and other linear projects, municipal and other infrastructure, reclamation projects, compliance monitoring and reporting, and components of environmental impact assessments.

    The senior ecologist is expected to lead or direct vegetation, wetland, wildlife and soil surveys and apply current scientific and regulatory knowledge to efficiently execute analysis and reporting. In consultation with others, the senior ecologist will provide recommendations for mitigation and monitoring, restoration, or reclamation for resource‑based industries including mining, oil and gas, midstream or oil sands in support of regulatory approval applications.

    Field office split: 5%/95%. Providing occasional support and training in the field.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Manage projects of medium to high complexity with multiple discipline teams, sub‑consultants, regulatory requirements.
    • Supervise staff and provide mentorship.
    • Provide input and advice on identifying and acting on opportunities to optimize the delivery of services to clients.
    • Develop proposals and represent/market the biophysical practice area.
    • Work with senior business development staff to support growth and new business for Millennium.
    • Assist the vegetation and wetlands, wildlife, soils, and reclamation disciplines, and others within Millennium, in completion of related environmental work.
    • Support and lead practice area initiatives.
    • Report preparation and conducting presentations to government agencies and clients.
    • Provision of field and other training to intermediate and junior staff.
    • Planning and conducting field surveys.
    • Provision of peer and senior review of reports and project deliverables.
    • Support species at risk and rare communities (wildlife and vegetation) mitigation planning and execution.
    • Perform other duties as directed by your supervisor to support the growth of the biophysical team, and
    • other duties as assigned.

    What You Bring

    • A minimum of 10 years' experience in a consulting environment with applicable knowledge in the Alberta and federal regulatory processes.
    • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
    • Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre‑access drug, alcohol and fitness testing, and
    • possess a valid, non‑GDL Class 5 Drivers license.

    Other Knowledge And Skills

    • Strong Project Management skills.
    • Technical report writing.
    • Good communication and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of ecological land classification, wetland classification, soil classification, and GIS.
    • A demonstrated knowledge of statistics, data management, and GIS applications to ecological studies.
    • Strong technical experience and training with a thorough understanding of practical ecological applications in a consulting environment.
    • Ability to work independently and within a team environment as well as an exceptional work ethic.
    • Understanding of the oil & gas, pipeline, and oil sands industry.
    • Mentoring skills; and
    • able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

    Working Conditions

    • This individual should expect to spend some of their work time at client sites; each individual trip lasting anywhere from 1 to 10 days. This individual may conduct assessments at industrial facilities and or greenfield sites in remote locations. In some cases, the field work may include carrying sampling equipment.
    • Office environment that requires sitting for extended periods of time, as well as field work.
    • Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
    • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
    • Sometimes requires long hours of work. Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required.
    • Ability to work varying shifts, including the occasional evening and night; and
    • required to walk, stand, climb, bend forward, kneel down, crawl, reach and grasp, push and pull objects, lift and/or move up to 30 kg, sometimes over the shoulders, repetitive bending and lifting of items, along with repetitive arm movements.
