Position Summary:


For over 35 years, the Discovery Centre has developed a reputation for being Nova Scotia's leader in the delivery of exciting hands-on, minds-on science programming for youth.


As a Science Communication Specialist (Climate), you will be responsible for the development and delivery of youth Climate Action programming, including writing and fact-checking engaging summaries on climate research.


The specialist is responsible for reviewing peer reviewed publications, translating the materials into plain language for youth and educators, and delivering hands-on activities.

The material covered will be Canadian in nature and relate to a variety of climate change and climate action topics.


This project will give the student the experience of working within a team setting, researching, editing, and developing materials that can easily be presented to educators for both elementary and high school audiences.

The student will benefit from the opportunity to improve upon their organizational skills, research and writing, climate change knowledge, presenting science, knowledge of educational practices, and working in a collaborative environment both virtually and in person.


Description of Tasks:


The Science Communication Specialist (Climate) works in the Science Education department and reports to the Project Manager, Youth Climate Action.


The primary tasks of the position are:

  • Reviewing peerreviewed publications and translating the materials into plain language for youth and educators
  • Editing and fact checking learning resources on climate science research
  • Delivering youth outreach programs related to climate change and climate action
  • Review and respond to feedback from peers, researchers, science centre contacts and schools
  • Collaborate and interact with staff, volunteers, science centres, community organizations, researchers, and the public in a friendly and professional manner

Qualifications:


Education:
Post-secondary studies in environmental science, science communication, science journalism/writing, or related discipline

Experience:
Experience in writing and summarizing complex information; experience in editing and fact checking; experience in preparing and presenting workshops considered an asset; experience working in a virtual environment preferred

Applicants must be eligible for the Student Work-Integrated (SWP) CO-OP Program through ECO Canada


Measurable Outcomes:


The Science Communication Specialist (Climate) will:

  • Review existing and contribute to creating new research guides depending on demand from the ongoing climate action project
  • Successfully develop and deliver, when applicable, climate change and climate action handson programs and activities
