Being the first point of contact, this position has one of the most important functions in supporting students with accessing Health & Counselling Services (HCS).

As a member of the MOA team offers the best customer experience through an empathetic and compassionate response to the needs and circumstances of students, and connects them to services at HCS.

Ensures front-line operations are upheld at a high level of effectiveness and efficiency, and provides support services to HCS clinical staff.


Qualifications:
High school graduation and one year of post-secondary education or formal equivalent (e.g. Medical Office Assistant Program) which includes Microsoft Word, electronic health record system training, some Microsoft Excel experience, database and spreadsheet courses. Demonstrates ability to work with vulnerable populations in volunteer settings is an asset. Medical Office Assistant Certificate. 2 years experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

  • Ability to obtain a valid CPR Level C certification and a Standard First Aid (or similar first aid training) certification within the first 6 months of starting the position and maintain ongoing recertification.
  • Ability to obtain Mental Health First Aid within the first year of starting the position.
  • Exceptional customer service skills demonstrating a high degree of empathy and caring compassion.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle challenging interactions with patient/client with empathy maintaining a calm, patient, kind, and nonjudgmental demeanor.
  • Selfmotivated team player with a positive attitude, shares workload amicably and respectfully, and is committed and responsible to contributing towards a wellfunctioning team.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, electronic health record systems (including scheduling, clinical and billing components), Excelleris, and databases at an intermediate level.
  • 50 wpm keyboarding skills with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills, a selfstarter, able to multitask, prioritize and share workload, works well independently, and is reliable, punctual and dependable.
  • Pays attention to detail, able to produce accurate and high quality work through concern for all areas involved.
  • Good knowledge of: medical, counselling, and health practices and general medical operational standards, electronic health record systems, and human anatomy, medical, psychiatry, and pharmacology terminology.
  • Good knowledge of medical diagnostic and treatment equipment and instruments, including clinic disinfection and sterilization methods and practices.
  • Good knowledge of initial screening and prioritizing urgency of patient/client care.
  • Good knowledge of infection control and preventing further contamination (e.g. cleaning equipment, cleaning exam rooms between use, good hand washing technique, etc.).
  • Good knowledge of current Medical Services Plan (MSP) billing codes.
  • Good analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to perform routine medical procedures such as taking vital signs, urinalysis, ECG, urine pregnancy testing, dressing changes, and peak flow meter testing.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to take and transcribe minutes of meetings and medical dictation.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times following HCS and SFU policies and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast paced busy health clinic.
- patients up to 25 kg, following basic occupational safety standards and guidelines.

  • Ability to provide coverage at other HCS sites (SFU Vancouver, SFU Surrey, SFU Burnaby).
  • Ability to work flexible shifts.
