Position Summary


Reporting to Manager, Health & Recovery, the Mediation Specialist supports 65 Dundas E tenants in the complaint process and to resolve conflicts peacefully and to minimize the likelihood that tenant conflicts result in eviction.

The Mediation specialist supports the operational success of the supportive housing program by providing key support in the eviction prevention process and the complaint process.

The Mediation specialist also provides drop in opportunities to support tenants around conflicts through the conflict cafe and other programming or workshops that support tenants around conflict resolution.


Responsibilities:


  • Support Tenant Skills Building around conflict resolution and their responsibility to community.
  • Respond to tenant complaints and collaborate with other 65 Dundas E support staff to support meaningful responses to tenant complaints and tenant conflicts.
  • Follow the Behavioural Eviction prevention process by supporting tenants to respond to complaints about their behaviour and to provide guidance and support for tenants to take responsibility for their impact on others.
  • Establish programming designed to diminish conflict in the building.
  • Provide 'drop in' supports to tenants around tenant conflict and interpersonal conflict through a Conflict Resolution or Empathy Cafe program.
  • Respond to tenant conflicts by providing mediation and conflict resolution support
  • Support tenants through a mediation or conflict resolution process and also support tenants in follow up meetings to ensure they are maintaining any commitments they have made as part of a conflict resolution agreement.
  • Mediate group conflicts and provide mediation and conflict resolution support to tenant groups as needed.
  • Participate in Case Management and Care Conference tables to support Front line Case Workers
  • Adapt and propagate an Anti-Violence Framework in conjunction with Management and staff and peers.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Education or certification in dispute resolution, conflict resolution, mediation and/or restorative justice required.
  • At least 23 years experience in conflict resolution, mediation and/or restorative justice required.
  • Experience in community based restorative justice an asset.
  • Experience participating in a mediation process an asset
  • Education and experience in homelessness work, housing support and mental health and addictions an asset.
  • Experience with program development and group facilitation an asset.
  • A progressive understanding of the pervasive systemic barriers that keep people in poverty and or houseless; committed to equity and social justice.
  • Creative problem solving and organizational skills; able to coordinate multiple tasks and issues through prioritizing, delegation and follow through on deadlines.
  • Able to work in a quickly changing and expanding program requiring flexibility and multitasking skills.
  • Selfdirected and independent, as well as proven experience in working effectively as an interdisciplinary team member and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a 'Clear' or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.
  • Must have uptodate vaccinations against COVID19 with a vaccine that has been approved for use in Canada.
