The South Asian Legal Clinic of British Columbia (SALCBC) is a registered charitable non-profit society committed to improving access to justice for South Asians in British Columbia. We recognize the importance of delivering culturally sensitive and appropriate legal advice and legal information to those who face barriers in accessing legal services and navigating the justice system.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and values-driven Staff Lawyer with at least 2-5 years of experience in family law to provide legal services at our legal clinic located in Surrey, BC. This full-time role is ideal for a legal professional who is passionate about supporting access to justice for marginalized communities. Compensation is commensurate with experience, with an annual salary range of $80,000 - $100,000.
Key Responsibilities
● Have experience litigating family law matters in BC Supreme Court and Provincial Court.
● Demonstrate proficiency in representing clients in alternative dispute resolution processes.
● Possess a solid understanding of the BC Family Rules of Court, Provincial Court Family and Child Protection Rules of Court, the Divorce Act, the Family Law Act, and the Child, Family and Community Service Act.
● Exhibit strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving work environment.
● Collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partners.
● Show a proven track record of working with low-income and diverse South Asian communities.
● Understand social justice issues and systemic barriers affecting the South Asian community, particularly those facing economic hardship.
● Be a self-starter, highly motivated to support clients independently and with support from Senior Lawyer, when required .
● Provide legal information and advocacy on family law and child protection matters under the supervision of the Senior Lawyer.
● Develop and deliver community legal education and create relevant legal resources.
Qualifications:
● LLB or JD with active membership in the Law Society of BC, in good standing
● Proven oral and written advocacy skills.
● Demonstrated experience working with marginalized clients using trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practices and a strong commitment to serving the underserved South Asian community.
● Exposure to the non-profit sector and pro bono work is an asset.
● Strong commitment to legal ethics, demonstrated through knowledge, practice and professional responsibility.
● Conversant in at least one South Asian language (e.g. Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu).
